LARGO, Md. – Dylan Irizarry (Statesboro, Ga./Statesboro) knocked in six runs in the opener and O'Neal Torche (Jersey City, N.J./St. Anthony's) drove in five runs in the nightcap to help Prince George's Community College to a doubleheader sweep against Howard University Club in non-conference baseball action on Saturday. The Owls (3-1) won the opener 23-2 and then took the nightcap, 33-0.
Irizarry smacked a three-run homer in the first inning of the opener for his first collegiate homer and then nearly hit a second-round tripper after driving the ball to the left field fence for a two-run double in the second. The freshman also scored two runs in the first game.
Torche went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBIs in the second game after scoring a run in the opener. He smacked a two-run double and a run-scoring single in the first before adding an RBI single in the second and a run-scoring double in the third.
Austin Adams (Atlanta, Ga./Whitewater), Josh Pietrandrea (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) and Vinny Rotundo (New York, N.Y./Middletown) each posted five RBIs on the day and Tommy Petrosino (Bayonne, N.J./St. Anthony's) registered four RBIs in the two games. Adams went 6-for-10 with seven runs scored while Rotundo went 4-for-6 with seven runs scored and Pietrandrea had a 4-for-7 performance with six runs scored. Petrosino scored eight runs and went 5-for-8 in the two games.
Along with Irizarry's great performance in the opener, Dominic Marquez (Long Beach, Calif./Jordan) went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI, and Naquan Holden (Brooklyn, N.Y./Perkiomen) added two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs in the first game.
Anthony Cavalier (Youngstown, Ohio/Braden River), who got the win in the opener on the mound, posted a 4-for-5 performance with four runs scored and three RBIs. The freshman recorded six strikeouts in the opener for his first collegiate win. Clark Reese (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) struck out seven batters in the nightcap to earn his first career win.
Prince George's returns to action and starts a four-team, five-game road trip against CCBC Essex in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference opener. Game time is 3 p.m.
