Owls Stumble On The Road Against DI Allegany
The Prince George's Community College men's basketball team opened up conference play on the road Tuesday, November 21st against NJCAA Division I opponent Allegany College of Maryland. Although the Owls led by as many as 16 points early in the second half, the Trojans mounted a comeback to hand Prince George's their first loss of the season, 84-75, and drop to 3-1 on the year.
A balanced attack by both teams saw 8 lead changes and 6 ties by the time the final horn sounded. The Owls had one of their best shooting performances on the year in the loss, hitting on 46% of shots from the floor and even higher from deep, connecting on 12 of 23 (52%) from beyond the arc.
Momentum shifting runs were made by both sides in the first half as Allegany opened up the game in front 9-0. Later in the first the Owls fired off a 12-0 run on four straight made threes to take command, 39-29. Things would settle down as Prince George's wound up entering the break up by five, 43-38. Deven Dowdie (Fort Washington, MD/Lanham Christian) was the top scorer for the Owls at the half with 11 points off the bench and a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor behind three 3-pointers.
Prince George's rolled into the second with a 9-0 stretch themselves to grow their lead to 14, (52-38). Moments after holding their largest lead of the game at 16 for the Owls, Allegany put together a 13-point swing to tie things up at 60 with 11 minutes to go. 8 minutes later the Owls found themselves trailing by 12 with under 2:30 left and were unable to close the gap down the stretch as Allegany held on for the win.
Sophomores Jasir Tremble (Washington, D.C./Theodore Roosevelt), Saveon Jackson (Kentland, MD/ KIPP College Prep), and Justin Minor (Largo, MD/Largo) finished as the leading scorers for the Owls with 19, 15, and 14 points, respectively.
Prince George's has a full week to reset surrounding the Thanksgiving break before they return to open up Region 20 DIII competition on the road against Pennsylvania Highlands Community College on Tuesday, November 28th.
