Men’s Basketball Picks Up 83-72 Win In Home Opener

The 8th ranked Prince George's Community College men's basketball team picked up where they left off in 2022-23, protecting Novak Field House in the Owls home opener as they defeated Camden County College 83-72 on Wednesday evening.

A slow start by both teams saw a combined total of just 6 points scored through almost four minutes of play before the two sides began to trade baskets shortly thereafter. Following four ties and three lead changes the Owls went on a 13-2 run to take a 22-13 lead and remained in front the remainder of the game.

Fouls were a problem early on for both programs with 26 called in the first half and 58 total by the final whistle, although both coaches managed their roster well with only one player on both the Owls and Cougars fouling out later on in the second half. With so many stoppages it was difficult for the Owls offense to really get going but still managed to build a double-digit lead by halftime, leading 45-33 heading into the locker room.

Freshman Jailin Landis (Capitol Heights, MD/Suitland) led the Owls in scoring at the break with 10 points while the bench chipped in a solid 15 points in the first.

A 9-0 stretch by the Owls to begin the second half grew their lead to 19 and deflated the Cougars on both sides of the ball. Prince George's went on to lead by as many as 25 points at the 6:57 mark which was emphasized by an Isaiah Crockett (Woodbridge, VA/Gar-Field) crashing dunk from a perfectly placed Myles Whitfield (Bowie, MD/Bowie) inbound pass during the Owls run which brought the crowd in Novak to their feet. With the Owls in complete control and carrying all the momentum, the Cougars were forced to resort to a physical attack which allowed them to get to the line several times down the stretch and cut into Prince George's lead. The Cougars managed to trim their deficit but never managed to come within ten as the Owls closed out the matchup on top, 83-72.

The Owls finished with ten different scorers by the final whistle while all thirteen on the roster saw game action. Sophomore Justin Minor (Largo, MD/Largo) finished as the top scorer with 17 points and just missed out on a double-double with 9 rebounds. Teammate Saveon Jackson (Kentland, MD/KIPP College Prep) was also one rebound shy of a double-double, ending with 11 points and 9 boards for the 6-foot guard. Jasir Tremble (Washington, D.C./Theodore Roosevelt) and Landis rounded out the top scorers for Prince George's with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The victory improves the Owls record to 2-0 ahead of their next matchup on Thursday, November 16th at home against Washington Adventist University JV. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 PM.
