Women’s Basketball Upended by #12 Northampton on the Road

The 9th ranked Prince George's Community College women's basketball team lost their season opener on the road Saturday, November 4th, losing 83-73 to the 12th ranked Northampton Spartans. Saturday was the first time in head coach Devin May's tenure that the Owls dropped their season opener and was also the first time the women's basketball program started the year 0-1 since the 2018-19 season.

The Owls found themselves trailing by 6, (24-18) at the first break before winning the second quarter and cutting into the Spartans lead by halftime, 42-37. Prince George's freshman Jai'Den Anderson (Springdale, MD/Charles Flowers) led the Owls in scoring at halftime with 16 points while adding 2 steals and a rebound. Six different Owls had scored at the break but struggled to contain the Spartans Kania Day who accounted for 18 points at the midway point.

Prince George's opened up the third period with an 11-2 run cut into the Spartans lead which culminated with a tie score at 48 with 6:19 to go after a Kalise Evans (Springdale, MD/Charles Flowers) layup forced Northampton to use a timeout to try and slow the Owls attack. The Spartans strategy worked as the Owls went cold the remainder of the quarter, managing just 6 points while Northampton stormed to a 66-54 lead by the end of the third period.

The Owls responded well as a team in the final ten minutes, holding the Spartans to a quarter-low in scoring with just 17 points while managing to get to the line plenty, which forced the clock to stop while they attempted to comeback now down by double-digits. While the team was able to force their way to the line, issues arose when capitalizing on their opportunities, finishing the period 4-15 from the free throw line in the 10-point defeat.

Anderson finished as the Owls leading scorer with 21 points while Evans, Amari Jones (Landover, MD/Word of Life Christian Academy), and Tamia Washington (Suitland, MD/Mt. Zion Prep) all finished with 10+ points.

The Owls now have an extended break to reset before their next action after their home opener against Camden County originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 8th was cancelled due to injuries to Camden's roster. Prince George's next contest is slated for Tuesday, November 21st at Allegany College of Maryland while their home opener will take place Friday, December 1st vs. Chesapeake College.
