Devin May Picks Up First Collegiate Victory in Lady Owls Return

The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team traveled to Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA on Tuesday afternoon, November 2nd in the Owls season opener under first year head coach Devin May. The Lady Owls never trailed on their way to a 77-58 victory behind strong outings from a squad comprised of all freshman.

The Owls first bucket scored since February 29th, 2020 was a three-pointer recorded by Janiah Williams (Washington, D.C.) on the very first shot attempt of the game. Williams refused to let up the remainder of the game as she finished with a triple-double (22 pts, 12 rebs, 10 blk). The Spartans kept pace with the Owls throughout the first two periods but were never able to take the lead from Prince George's as the Owls entered halftime leading 36-32.

A coaching adjustment in the third period sent the Owls defense into a full court press which resulted in 11 turnovers by the Spartans. This allowed Prince George's to capitalize in transition as Prince George's grew their lead to 18 by the end of the period, outscoring Northampton 29-15 to head into the final ten minutes leading 65-47. Prince George's surrendered only 11 points in the final period as they closed out the 77-58 victory.

After picking up his first collegiate victory as a head coach, May stated: "We had a back and forth first half where we would get a lead and watch it slip away, which I attribute to a lack of chemistry which is to be expected early on in any given season." May later went on to say, "We were able to settle down in the second half after making some adjustments on defense which allowed us to take the easy baskets on offense."

The Owls Vanessa Schwarzmann (Upper Marlboro, MD) led all scorers with 25 points in her own collegiate debut. Williams finished just shy with 22 in her triple-double performance while Tori Tolson (Clinton, MD) and Kelsey Vallair (Landover Hills, MD) both poured in 10 points each.

Prince George's will have a full week off before they host Garrett College in Novak Field House on Wednesday, November 10th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm.
