Lady Owls Complete Second Half Comeback Against Garrett

The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team hosted a game inside Novak Field House for the first time in 620 days on Wednesday afternoon, November 10th against the Garrett Lakers. The return to Novak also marked the opening game for first-year head coach Devin May at home. The lady Owls entered the matchup 1-0 after defeating Northampton on the road a week prior while the Lakers were a perfect 2-0, both convincing wins over the past weekend.

After an evenly matched first period saw the score knotted up 17-17, Garrett was able to build a 7-point cushion by halftime as they entered the break leading 36-29. Freshman Janiah Williams (Washington DC/Eastern Senior) led the Owls at halftime with 10 points to go with 7 rebounds but had also already collected 3 fouls. The Lakers Neah Henry led all scorers at the break with 15 points.

Trailing by 7, Prince George's came out aggressive in the third quarter as the Owls team jumped out to a quick 8-1 run to even the score at 37 before closing out the third with a 44-41 lead. The Owls defense held the Lakers to just 5 points in the third period, allowing Garrett to connect on only 1 of 17 shots. After swapping leads over the first few minutes into the final period, The Owls Vanessa Schwarzmann (Upper Marlboro, MD/Largo) hit her third 3-pointer of the day to put Prince George's on top, 57-50 with 2:47 remaining. The Owls surrendered just one layup over the closing minutes to finish off the Lakers 57-52 as time expired.

Williams finished with a 12-point, 10 rebound double-double to lead the Owls in scoring despite fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. Fellow freshman RaMyah Yearwood (Laurel, MD/Arundel) matched Williams' 12 points while collecting 6 rebounds herself.

The Owls handed Garrett their first loss of the season as Prince George's moved to 2-0 on the year as they picked up their first Maryland JUCO victory. The Owls return to Novak Field House for their next matchup on Tuesday, November 16th against Region 19 opponent Rowan College South Jersey – Gloucester. Tipoff is set for 6:30 PM.
