North Country Outshoots Prince George’s As Owls Season Comes To A Close

The Prince George's women's basketball team hit the hardwood one last time on Friday, March 11th as the Owls took on #12 North Country in a consolation matchup of the NJCAA National Championship. Prince George's used a big second period which included a 13-0 run at one point to cut into a large Saints lead, but the North Country Saints were able to pull away in the final two periods, 76-61.

A slow start by Prince George's in the first period saw the team put up just 6 points on 3-of-20 shooting while North Country shot 43% from the floor as they picked up 15 points. With the Owls quickly down 25-10 in the second period, Prince George's was able to put together the double-digit run behind 7 points from Tori Tolson to threaten the Saints. The Owls managed just three more points over the closing 2:46 of the period as North Country went into halftime in control, 32-26.

Alicia Jones led the Owls in scoring at the break with 11 points, adding 4 rebounds to go with it. Tolson had 9 points, 7 rebounds while Janiah Williams had 6 points and 9 rebounds.

The Owls had a productive third period on offense, registering 19 points but could not stop the Saints scoring as North Country hit 56% (10-18) of their shots, including 71% (5-7) from beyond the arc to send Prince George's into the final stretch down 12, 57-45.

The Owls started off the final period hot as Williams hit a deep jumper and Vanessa Schwarzmann drilled a three to cut the Saints lead to just seven, 57-50. North Country responded with two consecutive three's themselves to put the Owls back out of striking distance. RaMyah Yearwood fouled out with 7:54 remaining before Prince George's was able to pull to within ten once more at the 3:52 mark down by 9 but couldn't finish the job as North Country continued to hit shots with time running out, sending Prince George's out of the tournament 76-61.

Two-time NJCAA Player of the Week Janiah Williams finished off her stellar freshman season with a 20-point, 16-rebound double-double. Tori Tolson also had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Alicia Jones ended with 13 points, 5 rebounds while Vanessa Schwarzmann finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds.

The loss ends the Owls season with an 18-7 record under first year head coach Devin May. Joining the college this past summer, the future is bright for the Largo program under May who will have a chance for a full year of recruitment ahead of the 2022-23 season.
