Owls Prepared To Face Northland In First Round Of National Championship

Rochester, MN – The #8 seed Prince George's Community College Women's Basketball will face the #9 seed Northland Community & Technical College tomorrow, March 9th at 1 PM ET in Rochester, Minnesota to kick off the NJCAA Division III National Championship in the opening game of the tournament.

The Owls arrived in chilly Minnesota on Monday to prepare for the week ahead which included team practices on both Monday and Tuesday at the championship host site, the Rochester Regional Sports Center.

In coach Devin May's first year as head of the program the Owls earned an automatic bid to the championship after first winning the Region 20 Title and then defeating Dallas College – Cedar Valley in the Southeast District Championship. Northland, one of four at-large berths, was selected as the number 9 seed during the 2022 NJCAA Division III Selection Show after finishing the season as the number 2 program in the NJCAA weekly rankings.

Northland is roughly a six-hour drive from Rochester but will be considered the away team for Wednesday's game as the higher seed plays as host. The Owls have posted a perfect 3-0 record when playing at a neutral site this season.

The Owls seven player roster will be put to the test against a tough Pioneers squad which lists two student-athletes above six feet. Even with a potential size mismatch, the Owls will lean on their defense which ranks number one in the nation among Division III programs with a 29% opponent field goal percentage and second in opponent three-point percentage (20.3%). Prince George's also holds the point advantage, averaging 67.7 points per game compared to 59.3 for the Pioneers.

Keeping a balance between remaining aggressive on both sides of the ball and playing it safe to avoid foul trouble has put Prince George's in tough positions throughout the year with a smaller roster and may be the key to Wednesday's matchup as the Owls put it all on the line to advance in the tournament.

All games of the tournament will be live streamed and are available with a fee through the NJCAA Network. Viewers can visit the schedule of live events here.
