Owls Fall to CCBC Dundalk at the Buzzer
The Prince George's Community College men's basketball lost its final game of 2024 on Wednesday night against CCBC Dundalk, 75-72 in Novak Field House. The Lions improved to 8-4 while the loss dropped the Owls to 6-5 heading into the winter break.
Prince George's was up 33-32 at the half and was led by sophomore John Osuji with 9 points and 7 boards. Osuji, who comes off the bench for the Owls, made his presence felt especially on the offensive glass with 3 boards which led to second chance points for Prince George's. The team, however, continued their trend of poor shooting from deep, 1-for-7 (14.3%), as well as from the free throw line, 6-for-13 (46.2%).
Dundalk came out of the half on a 16-4 run to flip the script and put the Owls behind by double digits, 48-37. Prince George's responded with an 8-0 run themselves which was sparked by a Tyler Donald three-pointer at the 13:35 mark that helped to bring his team to within three, 48-45 with 12 minutes to go. The Owls continued to keep pace with the Lions but could never cut their deficit under three points until there were just 17 seconds left when Casheus Covington hit a three-pointer to pull his team to within one, 73-72.
The Lions responded with a layup on the other end with 9 seconds to go, 75-72. Without any timeouts remaining, the Owls were forced to quickly bring the ball up the floor and had a couple of good looks for the tying three-pointer. The first came up short from Jailin Landis before Lynn King III forced a steal following a Lions rebound and dished the ball back out to Landis who fired up another three at the buzzer which just missed, hitting off the top of the rim before falling to the ground and sealing the loss for Prince George's.
Donald finished as the Owls leading scorer with 11 points while dishing out 4 assists. Osuji just missed out on his first career double-double with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Covington also finished with 9 points to go with 6 assists and 3 rebounds.
Wednesday's loss was the third one in the past two weeks that came down to the wire for Prince George's after the Owls dropped matches against a pair of ranked opponents, each by a single point. The Owls will now get some rest over the holiday break and look to bounce back when they return in 2025 beginning with a home game against College of Southern Maryland on Wednesday, January 8th.
