The Prince George's Community College men's basketball team's unbeaten record in their home gym came to an end on Wednesday, December 4th against Hagerstown Community College as the Owls fell to the Hawks, 76-66. For a matchup that included 8 ties and 9 lead changes by the final horn, it wasn't until late that Hagerstown was able to distance themselves from Prince George's and build up a game-high 14-point lead at the 7:20 mark in the second half before closing things out.
The Owls trailed by just three, 36-33, at the half but were showing signs of a poor shooting night ahead after hitting just 12.5% (1/8) from deep and 50% (8/16) from the free throw line. Freshman Casheus Covington led the Owls in scoring at the break with 10 points off the bench while adding 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Shooting struggles continued in the second half for Prince George's who played from behind for the entire 20-minute half while trying to play catch up. Despite playing hard to the very end, the Owls were unable to close the gap against the Hawks who dealt Prince George's their second loss of the season to drop to 5-2. The Owls ended up being their own worst enemy as they collectively shot just 20% (2/20) from three and 50% (14/28) at the charity stripe in the loss.
Sophomore Jailin Landis finished as the Owls leading scorer with 17 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Covington ended the night with 12 points and 8 boards while Lynn King III added 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks to round out the top performers for Prince George's.
The Owls now must quickly try to turn things around ahead of their next matchup on Friday, December 6th back in Novak Field House against a ranked Cecil program. Tip-off is slated for 7 PM.
