Owls Bounce Back With OT Victory Over Wildcats
The Prince George's Community College men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak over the weekend, defeating the visiting Community College of Allegheny County Wildcats in overtime, 88-83.
The first half was an early indicator of how the game would unravel as teams went into the locker room tied up at 41 after John Osuji stole the ball from the Wildcats under the basket and threw it forward to Jaylen Judge who scored just before the buzzer to knot things up. The Owls freshman Willie Rivera Jr. was tied as the game's leading scorer at the half with 13 points on 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Prince George's opened the second half with an 8-0 run before Allegheny County fought back to tie things back up at 54 apiece with 13:35 remaining. Teams continued trading baskets for several minutes until the 6:35 mark when the Wildcats took a 5-point lead, 69-64. Allegheny managed to hold a slim lead over Prince George's as time ticked away when Rivera Jr. connected on a game-tying three with 1:10 left to even the score at 75. The Wildcats responded with a layup to take back control before Lynn King III threw down a dunk to even the score at 77 and force overtime.
Teams once again went back and forth to open the extra period when Rivera Jr. hit another three to put the Owls in front for good, 84-81, before closing out any final Wildcats comeback and earning the 88-83 victory.
Rivera Jr. finished with 21 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds on the day as the Owls top scorer. Jailin Landis and King III each had 16 points while Landis collected 14 rebounds to earn himself another double-double on the year. Judge was approaching a double-double as well with 10 points and 8 rebounds for the sophomore.
Sunday's victory puts the Owls back in the win column and moves the team back to .500 on the year with a 9-9 record. Maybe even more importantly, Sunday gives the team some positive momentum moving forward as they look to make a playoff push with 6 of their final 7 games on the schedule coming again Region 20 divisional opponents. Up first is a non-divisional matchup with Washington Adventist University JV's squad on the road Tuesday, February 11th at 6 PM.
