The Owls men's basketball team picked up their second straight win on Thursday evening, February 13th, defeating visiting College of Southern Maryland, 75-54. The win brings the Owls record to 10-9 on the season, which includes a 3-6 mark in Region 20 division games used to determine postseason eligibility and seeding.
The night began with a recognition of the team's seven sophomores which gave some energy to the home crowd and team as the Owls opened on a 9-0 run while holding Southern Maryland without a basket until nearly five minutes of action. Despite the hot start by the Owls, the Hawks erased their early deficit and wound up heading into halftime with a 33-31 lead. The Owls had eight different players who scored by halftime which was led by sophomore Jailin Landis with 8 points at the intermission.
Prince George's began the second half on an 8-0 run to regain control and never gave up the lead the remainder of the game. The Owls later took a double-digit lead with under ten minutes to go, 55-45 and held the Hawks to under ten points scored the rest of the way while playing their reserves down the stretch as all thirteen active players checked into the game at one point.
Landis finished the evening with a team-high 16 points and had 4 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Sophomore Teny Gakdeng had his best outing of the year as he neared a double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Fellow sophomore Casheus Covington added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in 20 minutes off the bench for Prince George's in the win.
The Owls will look to continue their strong second half defensive effort as they look ahead to their next matchup, another divisional game against Garrett College on the road Saturday, February 15th. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 PM.
