Prince George's Community College Women's Basketball Team Vies for NJCAA National Championship and Makes History along the Way

LARGO, MARYLAND --  The Athletics Department at Prince George's Community College (PGCC) is proud to announce that its Women's Basketball team is headed to the Nationals. Led by Head Coach Tiona Harris, the 14-10 Lady Owls are one of eight teams in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Women's Basketball National Championship. This achievement is monumental for the College, as it is the first time in the institution's history the women's team has made it this far in the Division III program. The Lady Owls are slated to compete in games from March 12-14, 2015.

Expected to navigate PGCC's Lady Owls through the fierce competition is freshman Guard, Markaila Carter, and sophomore Forward, Jaida Jenkins. Carter garnered a stellar season averaging 17 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4 assists while teammate Jenkins averaged 19 points and 15 rebounds per game. Although the Lady Owls have fared well against all of their Division III opponents during the regular season, Carter and Jenkins carried most of the workload offensively. Not to be underestimated, the skillset from the entire team is what's made them top contenders, and it's their strong sense of comradery that will be their 'ace in the hole' come game time.  Their agile rebounding will also provide a huge advantage for this ambitious team.

"To say that we are extremely proud of these young ladies would be an understatement," said Dr. Tyjuan Lee, Vice President for Student Services. "The team's consistent hard work and determination is the reason they are making College history, but it's their commitment to excellence that is inspiring a generation of dynamic female athletes."

The NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship will take place at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA. The PGCC Lady Owls will play three games during the championship with Roxbury Community College (22-1) being their first opponent on Thursday, March 12. Game time begins at 1:00 p.m.
