Prince George's Women's Basketball Drops First Game Of New Year At Anne Arundel

ARNOLD, Md. – Prince George's Community College starts 2018 with a 79-63 loss to Anne Arundel Community College in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XX and Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) women's basketball action on Friday.

Gina Seifert (Owings, Md./Northern) paced the Owls (5-8, 2-4 MD JUCO) with 25 points and 15 rebounds. The sophomore connected on 11 of her 25 shots from the field and 3 of 4 from the free throw line to notch her fourth-straight game with at least 21 points, eighth 20-point performance of the season and ninth of her career. She has posted at least 25 points in a game five times this season. She also notched her 11th double-double in 13 games this season and 21st of her career while reaching 15 rebounds or more for the eighth time in her sophomore campaign.

Imani Yates (Seat Pleasant, Md./Friendship Collegiate) added 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. The freshman posted her third 20-point game this season and third in her last eight tilts. Yates has scored double figures eight times in 2017-18.

Myanna Strong (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo) chipped in 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Strong reached double figures for the sixth time this season and eighth of her career. Aja Ceesay (Fajara, Gambia/Gambia Methodist) hauled in a career-high 13 rebounds in the loss. Ceesay becomes the fifth different player to post double figures in rebounds in a game this year.

Anne Arundel jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the first six minutes and 29 seconds of the game before Prince George's closed the first quarter by scoring six of the final nine points to end the period trailing 14-13. Yates, Ceesay and Gia Thomas (Riverdale, Md./Fairmont Heights) each recorded two points in this stretch.

Just like in the first quarter, Yates drained a triple to start the period to give the Owls a 16-14 lead with 9:27 left in the stanza. Strong hit 1 of 2 at the free throw line to extend the advantage to three points 24 seconds later. After the Riverhawks scored the next four points to take an 18-17 edge, Seifert answered with a basket in the paint at 7:32 to give Prince George's its final lead at 19-18. Anne Arundel then scored the next 12 points to take a 30-19 lead with 3:18 remaining in the quarter and went into the locker room with a 36-26 advantage.

The Riverhawks outscored the Largo program 24-14 in the third quarter while the Owls held a 23-19 edge in the fourth period, but Anne Arundel earned the victory.

Prince George's returns to action on Wednesday at home against Baltimore City. Game time is 5 p.m.
