Women’s Basketball Lands Three On All-Region Teams

Three sophomores on the Prince George's Community College women's basketball team received NJCAA Division III All-Region honors this past week, it was announced by Region 20. Janiah Williams (Washington DC) and Vanessa Schwarzmann (Upper Marlboro, MD) were named First Team All-Region while Alicia Jones (Bowie, MD) was selected as an Honorable Mention. The full team listings can be viewed on the Region 20 website.

This is Jones first selection to an All-Region Team while Williams and Schwarzmann have now been named to the First Team in back-to-back years.

Schwarzmann has been a sharpshooter ever since joining Prince George's and currently ranks third in the nation with 87 made three-pointers on the year with a good chance to finish first. Despite playing fewer games than the two shooters above her, Schwarzmann is only 6 three-pointers away from matching the leader in made threes with neither of the two ahead of her about to play in the National Championship. The next closest shooter that will also be playing in the tournament is from No. 7 seed Riverland and is 12 threes behind.

Williams and Jones, meanwhile, have been a staple for the Owls on defense which they use to create opportunities in transition. Williams has had another outstanding season protecting the paint and ranks 9th in the country with 60 blocks which often turned into points on the other end for Jones who excels at finishing at the rim, boasting just under a 44% field goal percentage.

All three honorees are in their second year at Prince George's as they prepare to make another run at a National Title. The Lady Owls trio has combined for nearly 1,800 total points during their historic run that has included back-to-back Region 20 Titles, a Southeast District Championship, and most recently a Mid-Atlantic District Championship. Look for all three to help lead Prince George's in Rochester, MN as they chase a National Championship. Their journey begins on Wednesday, March 15th when they take on the No. 9 seed, Anoka-Ramsey. All games of the National Championship will be live streamed via the NJCAA Network with different package options available for the week.
