Prince George’s Wins Second-Straight District Championship, Advances To National Championship In Rochester, MN

The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team won their second straight District Championship on Saturday, defeating Region 10 Champion Central Carolina Community College by a final score of 63-52.

The Lady Owls led for the majority of the game, playing from behind for a total of just 48 seconds which came in the first few minutes of action. Prince George's led by as many as 19 which occurred as the second period was winding down and would ultimately head into the break with a 35-19 lead. Alicia Jones and Kelsey Vallair led in scoring for the Owls at the midway point with 9 points apiece which included a 3-for-6 line from deep for Vallair who came off the bench. Jones had already collected 6 steals by the break which was huge for the Owls offense who used them to score in transition.

Central Carolina's Cougars threatened in the final two quarters as they beat the Owls in the third (15-11) and final period (18-17), but Prince George's was able to keep enough separation to remain in control. All seven of the Owls who checked in scored in Saturday's game with Vallair and Vanessa Schwarzmann both leading the way with 15 points. Jones ended with 11 while Janiah Williams picked up a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Sonia Chofong had the best game of her two-year career as an Owls on the day as she ended with 9 rebounds and 6 points on a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor.

With the win, the Owls are now one of eight district champions across the country which earns the team an automatic bid to the National Championship. The full seedings and bracket reveal will be announced live on the NJCAA Selection Show on Wednesday, March 8th at 3PM ET. Seeds 1-4 will earn a first-round bye and will begin play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 16th while seeds 5-12 start in the first round on Wednesday, March 15th.
