Owls Fall To Southern Maryland 2-1 In Home Opener

The Prince George's Community College men's soccer team fell to College of Southern Maryland, 2-1, in the Owls 2023 home opener on Thursday evening, August 31st. Freshman Johnny Sesay scored the game's third and final goal to get the Owls on the board in the 82nd minute.

Coming off their season opener in which Prince George's scored two goals in the first 21 minutes of action, the Owls offense struggled against Southern Maryland's Hawks. The Owls came close in transition during the first half when a deep shot by freshman Dave Corvera fired off the crossbar, but the Hawks managed to collect the rebound and clear it out of danger. Goalkeeper Bilal Odeh was busy in the first half as he made 5 saves to keep Southern Maryland off the board and head into halftime tied up at 0-0.

The Hawks broke the tie at the 50th minute when a shot deflected off an Owls defender and snuck in past Odeh. Southern Maryland added their second goal in the 71st minute after a foul called on Prince George's allowed the Hawks to play a ball deep into Owls territory before it was played across the box and into the back of the net, giving Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead.

Prince George's managed to get on the board late when Sesay gathered the ball and drove across the top of the box before sending a shot past the Hawks keeper to cut into their lead, 2-1. Sesay had one more chance late as time was winding down but pressure from the defense wouldn't allow him enough time to deliver a clean strike as Southern Maryland collected the shot and kept possession in their offensive side of the ball as the game ended, moving the Owls to 0-1-1 to start the year.

Prince George's will have a few days off before regrouping to travel to Montgomery College on Tuesday, September 5th to play the Raptors at 7 PM.
