Pair Of Late Goals Lifts The Owls Over Carroll

The Prince George's Community College men's soccer team travelled to Westminster, MD on Tuesday, October 10th to take on the Carroll Community College Lynx. After 75 scoreless minutes, the Owls found the back of the net twice in the closing stretch to earn their second straight 2-0 shutout victory and improve to 5-4-1, 3-4-1 MD JUCO on the season.

A fairly even first half saw the Lynx draw a bit more control offensively as they outshot Prince George's 12-8 and dominated in corner kicks, 7-1. However, the Owls made Carroll's keeper go to work as the Largo program created five shots on goal while the Lynx managed just one off their twelve attempts. The Owls also had several promising attacks, one of which actually went in for a goal, called back for offsides as Prince George's racked up three offsides calls through the first 45 minutes.

The Owls flipped the shot counter in the second half, firing off three more (12-9) than the Lynx after the break, again forcing Carroll's keeper to make five saves in the half. It wasn't until the 76th minute when an Owls corner kick fell to the feet of sophomore captain Anibal Villatoro-Giron right around the penalty kick line, that one was able to finally go in. Villatoro-Giron fired the ball into a wall of both Carroll and Prince George's players which somehow found its way through an opening and into the back of the net to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Prince George's had two one-on-one attempts with the Lynx goalie over the next several minutes which he stepped up and applied enough pressure onto to keep the Owls lead at just one as the final whistle approached. Chukuwma Maduwuba, the Owls leading goal scorer this year, had one of those attempts but later redeemed himself with his ninth goal in the 85th minute from an Anthony Garcia assist.

With the final whistle Prince George's earned their third consecutive victory while outscoring their opponents by a combined 12-1. The Owls will stay on the road for their next match against CCBC Catonsville on Thursday, October 12th at 4 PM. The Cardinals enter with a 5-8-2 overall record, including 3-6-1 in Maryland JUCO play.
