Hovermill Garners NJCAA Division III Pitcher Of The Week Honors For Second Time This Season

LARGO, Md. – Michael Hovermill, Jr. (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill), a member of the Prince George's Community College baseball team, has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Pitcher of the Week for the week of Apr. 24-30. It is second time this season the freshman has received the top pitcher in the nation award after also garnering the recognition for the week of Mar. 27-Apr. 2.

Hovermill, a right-handed pitcher, tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts and two walks in a 3-0 win against Westmoreland County Community College on Saturday. With the win, the freshman picked up his team-leading sixth win on the mound this season.

It marks the second time this year Hovermill has earned the NJCAA Division III Pitcher of the Week honor after he pitched a nine inning complete-game gem in a 7-1 win against Anne Arundel Community College on Mar. 28, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts on 117 pitches to earn the recognition for the week of Mar. 27-Apr. 2.

Since that start against Anne Arundel, Hovermill is 6-0 with a 0.55 ERA, 32 strikeouts and seven walks in six appearances, including three starts. For the year, the freshman is 6-0 with 35 strikeouts and a 1.83 ERA in 39.1 innings pitched.

The Owls have won 11 of their last 14 games and 18 of their last 24 contests. Prince George's, who has won 20 games for the first time under head coach Buddy Foster, is 28-11-1 on the year, including 12-10-1 against Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference opponents. The Largo team is 14-6-1 against Division II programs and 9-1 against Division III opponents this season.

Prince George's, who swept a doubleheader against the College of Southern Maryland on Tuesday, travels to Cecil on Thursday. First pitch is 3 p.m.
