Prince George's Earns All-Academic Recognition From NJCAA Region XX And Maryland JUCO
LARGO, Md. – Prince George's Community College registered eight student-athletes on the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) All-Academic team and seven student-athletes were recognized on the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XX All-Academic team.
Owls men's soccer's players Fernando Ordonio (Annapolis, Md.), Fredy Roque (Beltsville, Md.), Calvin Tabetah (Bowie, Md.) and Farouk Tijani (Hyattsville, Md.), baseball pitcher Michael Hovermill, Jr., (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), and women's basketball players Gina Seifert (Owings, Md.) and Lisa Seifert (Owings, Md.) were each named to both the NJCAA Division III Region XX and Maryland JUCO All-Academic team while men's soccer player Elmer Hernandez (College Park, Md.) was also selected to the Maryland JUCO All-Academic team.
Hernandez, who is majoring in general studies, appeared in 17 games including 15 starts on the year. He dished out an assist against Allegany on Oct. 7.
Ordonio, who is majoring in general studies, appeared in 14 games including five starts on the year and posted two goals for four points. He registered a tally against Allegany on Oct. 7 and then found the back of the net four days later against Frederick.
Roque, who is majoring in accounting, appeared in 10 matches including seven starts in his second season in Largo. A member of the Prince George's defense that allowed 1.17 goals against average, the sophomore posted three shots on the year.
Tabetah, who is majoring in biology, posted four goals and one assist for nine points in 19 games including 15 starts on the soccer pitch. Selected as an NJCAA All-Academic third-team honoree, Tabetah posted the decisive goal along with an assist against Cecil on Sept. 9 and against Harford on Oct. 18. The freshman posted a tally in both games in the NJCAA Division III Championship against Camden on Nov. 10 and Bristol on Nov. 11.
Tijani, who is majoring in engineering, played in four games for the Owls in the defense. The men's soccer team won the NJCAA Division III Region XX title and advanced to the NJCAA Division III Championships in 2016.
Just like the men's soccer team, the Owls baseball team won the NJCAA Division III Region XX crown and advanced to the NJCAA Division III World Series. Hovermill, who is majoring in general studies, went 8-1 with a 3.45 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched. A two-time NJCAA Division III Pitcher of the Week, Hovermill pitched the decisive game in both the Region XX and NJCAA District D Championship games.
Gina Seifert, who is majoring in general studies, averaged 11.0 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in 25 contests. Selected to the NJCAA Division III Region XX All-Tournament team, the freshman recorded 17 double-figure performances in points including a career-best 20 points against Brookdale on Jan. 28. The Owings, Md., native also had 15 contests with 10 or more rebounds including a career-high 19 boards at CCBC Catonsville on Feb. 3. She was also named to the NJCAA All-Academic first team and recognized as the 2017 Prince George's Athletics Department Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Lisa Seifert, who is majoring in elementary/special education, averaged 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds per game in 25 games this season. In her freshman campaign, she posted two double-figure performances including a career-high 14 points against Allegany College of Maryland on Jan. 6, 2016. An NJCAA All-Academic second-team selection, she was named the Prince George's Athletics Department Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2016.
