Prince George's Baseball Continues Homestand With Twinbill Against Bergen County On Sunday

opening pitch… After opening the home slate with three wins last weekend, Prince George's continues its 10-game homestand with a doubleheader against the Garden State's Bergen County Community College. The two teams were last scheduled to play in 2015, but the twinbill was cancelled due to the weather.

the word on bulldogs… Bergen County was slated to open its season at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on Thursday. The Bulldogs are making it an Old Line state weekend and will battle CCBC Dundalk on Saturday before heading to Largo on Sunday. Bergen County finished 17-19 last year under ninth-year head coach Steven Mimms.

last time out… The Prince George's Community College baseball team swept a three-game series against Orange County Community College last weekend. The Owls defeated the Orange Colts 10-2 in the 2017 home opener on Saturday and then won by the identical scores of 6-5 in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday. In the 10-2 win, Prince George's used a two-run first, a four-run third and a three-run sixth in the 10-2 win. Kilian Bloat led the way with a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored and an RBI while Bay To went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.  On the hill, Dakota McFadden allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts to earn the win. The Owls rallied from a 5-0 deficit after two innings by scoring a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth for the come-from-behind 6-5 victory to start the afternoon. Brandon Crosby recorded two RBIs along with a hit and a run scored while McFadden added a hit and two RBIs in the opener. Ryan Faircloth pitched the final three innings, allowing a hit with two strikeouts to pick up the victory. Harold Marte went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a homer to propel Prince George's to a 6-5 win in the nightcap. To also went yard for the Owls and McFadden recorded two hits and a run. Kevin Kornieck pitched the final frame to earn the win on the hill. Prince George's scored four times in the first three innings to take a 4-2 lead and added two runs in the seventh before Orange County nearly rallied to tie the game after scoring three times in the seventh.

next on tap… Prince George's remains in Largo against CCBC Essex on Tuesday, CCBC Catonsville on Thursday, Garrett College (DH, Mar. 12) and Harford Community College (Mar. 14) all make their way to campus during this 10-game homestand.

in the rankings… Brandon Crosby leads the NJCAA Division III with 10 stolen bases while ranking second in the category in Maryland JUCO. He also ranks second in the nation and first in MD JUCO in RBIs (21) while also ranking fourth in MD JUCO and ninth in the nation in batting average (.559). Harold Marte ranks second in the league and sixth in the nation in home runs with three roundtrippers while Kevin Kornieck and Dakota McFadden are third in MD JUCO and fourth in Division III with two wins on the mound. McFadden also ranks fifth in RBIs (12), fifth in ERA (1.35), sixth in stolen bases (3), sixth in strikeouts (15) and seventh in batting average (.522) in MD JUCO. Kilian Bloat is fifth in the league and 10th in the nation in batting average (.550) while also ranking in fifth in stolen bases (5) and seventh in strikeouts on the mound (14) in MD JUCO. Dwayne Coleman is third in the league and the nation in saves (1) and along with teammate Ryan Faircloth is third in MD JUCO in homers (2). Jonathan Mahoney ranks fourth in the league and eighth in the nation in strikeouts (20). NOTE: Maryland JUCO statistics including all of the community colleges in Maryland (Division I, II and III) with the NJCAA statistics are only other Division III junior college programs.

the roster… Head coach Buddy Foster has added 11 freshman to his team in 2017 while returning 10 players from last year's team.

a loss to the owls family... Legendary Prince George's baseball coach William "Bumps" Vaughan passed away at the age of 90 on Feb. 25. In his long career as a head coach includes 21 years at the helm of the Owls from 1986-2005. The Owls will be wearing a special patch on their uniforms in honor of Vaughan and the athletic department will pay tribute to the legendary coach at an upcoming game.

about the coach… Head coach Buddy Foster enters his sixth season as the head coach of the baseball team. Foster has been at Prince George's since the 2009 campaign after serving as the squad's pitching coach for three seasons before being elevated to the head coach position. He guided the 2014 Owls to the NJCAA Region XX Division III title and advanced to the NJCAA Division III World Series.
