Lady Owls Advance To Region 20 Semifinals With 60-52 Victory Over Chesapeake In Quarterfinal Round
The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team handled business on Wednesday night, defeating Chesapeake College 60-52 in a quarterfinal matchup of the Region 20 Division II Tournament hosted by Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland.
The Owls, who entered the tournament as the #2 seed with an 8-1 region divisional record, were matched up against the #7 seed, Chesapeake College, with a 4-5 record in Region 20 DII games.
The Owls opened the contest with their best quarter of the day as they scored on their first possession on their way to 21 points in the first frame compared to Chesapeake's 15. Fouls were an issue early on for the Skipjacks who entered with only 7 players available for the day. The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter with 15 apiece as Prince George's entered the half holding onto a 6-point lead, 36-30.
Chesapeake began to close the gap in the third as they outscored the Owls 18-15 and took their only lead of the game, 46-45 at one point in the quarter before Prince George's answered right back and retook the lead as they entered the final ten minutes in a tight battle, 51-48.
The Owls shutdown any momentum Chesapeake had left with time ticking away as the Skipjacks had two players foul out in the second half, forcing them to use only their five left the rest of the way. Prince George's managed to contain any Skipjacks threat, allowing Chesapeake to score just 4 points in the final period as they closed out the 8-point victory to advance to Friday's semifinal round.
Freshman Kryslynn Stewart once again finished as the leading scorer for Prince George's as she finished with 21 points to go with 7 rebounds for the guard. Sophomore Tamia Washington returned to her usual role of being the first off the bench after the Owls returned some players back from injury. Washington provided her same spark on both sides of the floor, picking up a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win. She also had 6 steals and dished out 4 assists during a busy day for the Oxon Hill, MD native.
The Owls will now face the #6 seeded Montgomery College Raptors in the second semifinal game on Friday, March 7th at 2 PM. Montgomery (5-4 Region 20 DII) advanced to Friday after defeating #3 CCBC Catonsville in the nightcap of the opening quarterfinal round on Wednesday, defeating the Cardinals, 52-45. Prince George's defeated Montgomery earlier in the season on the road back in December, 83-67. Coach Devin May will look to recreate the same outcome again on Friday versus the Raptors, this time in neutral territory.
Tickets remain $20 per day to enter on Friday. Howard accepts cash or card. All games will be livestreamed on Howard Community College's official athletics Vimeo page, which can be found here: https://vimeo.com/showcase/howardccathletics.
