Lady Owls Defeat WVU Potomac State In Rare Matchup

The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team was back in Novak Field House on Saturday, January 18th, hosting WVU Potomac State for a Region 20 divisional matchup in front of a home crowd during the department's annual Family Day. The Lady Owls fought hard in a back-and-forth matchup before pulling away in the final frame to secure a 69-58 victory.

Saturday's contest was the first time the two teams had seen one another since the 2015-16 season when Potomac State handed the Owls a 60-point loss on the road, 114-54. This time around, the Owls relied on their quick defensive hands which resulted in points in transition and was one of the team's keys to success on the day.

Prince George's entered halftime with a slim 38-31 lead and was being led by freshman Kryslynn Stewart who had 16 points by the halfway point. Potomac State managed to cut the Owls lead to just three, 52-49, by the end of the third quarter to enter the final stretch with some positive momentum. Despite the Catamounts heading in the right direction, Prince George's held strong defensively in the final frame, allowing just 9 points scored in the last ten minutes while outpacing Potomac State to secure the 9-point win.

Stewart entered foul trouble in the second half but still managed to finish as the Owls leading scorer by the final horn with 18 points. Tamia Washington finished just behind with 17 points while grabbing 5 steals and dishing out 4 assists.

The victory improved the Owls to 11-2 on the season which includes a perfect 5-0 mark in Region 20 divisional games with a showdown against the region's other undefeated team, CCC Essex, up next on the road on Wednesday, January 22nd. Essex enters Wednesday's matchup as the NJCAA's 3rd ranked program with a 15-0 record which also includes a 5-0 record against divisional opponents. Wednesday's high stakes game tips off at 7 PM in Rossville, MD in the Wellness & Athletics Center.
