Owls Score Back-to-Back to Beat CCBC Catonsville, Advance to Region Semi-Finals

Prince George's Community College men's soccer overcame an early 1-0 deficit against CCBC Catonsville in the Region 20 DII Championship quarterfinals on Tuesday, October 24th, scoring two second half goals to send the team to the region semi-finals next week.

The Cardinals struck early, scoring in just the 3rd minute to take control. Catonsville's lone goal on the day was the first allowed by the Owls defense and goalkeeper Jairo Caceres since September 19th, breaking a five-game shutout streak for Prince George's. The Owls managed to put three shots on frame in the first half but were unable to connect as the squad entered halftime trailing 1-0.

A sense of urgency could be felt from the Owls in the second half with their season on the line when Perez Hengoue lofted a deep free kick over the Cardinals keeper to even the score in the 64th minute. On the ensuing kickoff, the Owls Osenose Ibhagui immediately stole the ball from Catonsville and passed to teammate Jerson Chirino who took a chance at a deep shot. Chirino's attempt ricocheted off a Cardinals defender and found the back of the net just 20 seconds after their first goal to suddenly take a 2-1 lead.

Catonsville turned up the pressure with time ticking away, creating multiple corner kick opportunities. The Cardinals came closest to tying things up in the 80th when a shot clanged off the left post and fell into the box before the Owls managed to clear the ball and any possibility of a second chance goal. Prince George's held strong the final ten minutes to keep their season alive and advance to the semi-finals.

The #2 seeded Owls will face #3 Frederick Community College on Wednesday, October 30th at 6 PM in the Region 20 semi-finals hosted by Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD. Frederick defeated WVU Potomac State College in their quarterfinal game earlier in the day with an equal 2-1 victory. There is a $5 admission fee to Wednesday's game.
