The Owls men's soccer team opened the 2024 season on Tuesday, August 27th against a divisional opponent, CCBC Catonsville, after Prince George's announced their move to Division II the past year.
The Owls wasted little time in their season debut with the first goal coming in the 13th minute from freshman Zico Tesheira, scoring directly from a corner kick. Tesheira found the net again less than ten minutes later, hitting on a free kick that slipped just past the Cardinals keeper and off the bottom of the crossbar to put the Owls up 2-0. Freshman Perez Hengoue made it 3-0 for Prince George's in the 35th minute after finishing off the assist from teammate Michael Argueta Diaz before heading into halftime.
Hengoue stayed hot in the second half, scoring twice in the 54th minute to earn a hat trick on the day before assisting Tesheira in the 58th minute to give the second Owls player a hat trick in the team's first game of the year. Catonsville managed to respond with a goal in the 60th to make it 6-1. Sophomore Frank Olom capped off the scoring with Prince George's 7th goal in the 87th minute to seal the victory and pick up the win under recently appointed head coach, Taiye Akinmboni. Freshman Jairo Caceres earned the win as goalkeeper with 3 saves while Ngonya Tajong served minutes in relief of Caceres down the stretch.
The Owls have a tough matchup up next against CCBC Essex on the road on Thursday, August 29th at 7 PM. The Knights are currently 2-0 and ranked as the #4 program among NJCAA DII programs. Prince George's will aim to build on their momentum from their season opener, seeking their first win against Essex since the 2019 season.
