opening tip…
 Prince George's looks to win the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Region XX title for the eighth time in program history and first since the 2015-16 campaign when it travels to Western Pennsylvania this weekend. The Owls open the tournament against a familiar foe in No. 3 seed and host Westmoreland County. The Largo program defeated the Wolfpack last season in the region tournament to advance to the championship game. With a win on Saturday, Prince George's would move into the championship game for the second-straight season under head coach Brian Johnson.

ticket prices… Adults $5.00, Students $3.00, Students with College ID free, Children 12 and under and seniors are free. Individual Tournament pass: $8.00. It does not appear that Westmoreland County will be providing live stats or live video so @PGCCOwls and www.pgccowls.com will post information when we receive it.

region history… The Owls have won the NJCAA Region XX title seven times (1990-91, 1992-93, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16). The squad has advanced to the title bout in four-straight campaigns and five of the last six years. Last year, Prince George's defeated Westmoreland County 82-65 in the semifinals and then nearly overcame an 18-1 hole to start the game to rally past Montgomery in the championship game, but lost 98-85 in overtime.

tip-ins… Sophomore Mykal Johnson needs seven points to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. Johnson is averaging 19.0 points per game on the road this season. The sophomore averaged 10.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the two region games last season. Sophomores Kennith Ford and James Hagins also played in both region contests last season. Ford registered 17 points in each tilt and Hagins recorded a then career-high 12 points and 11 rebounds against Westmoreland County in the semifinals. Ford is averaging 15.4 points per game on the road this season. Sophomore Gus Stone is averaging 24.4 points per game in 11 road games this season and has notched at least 20 points in nine of the 11 games away from Novak Field House. Freshman Shiloh Beale has scored double figures in six-straight games and is averaging 17.5 points per game in that stretch after averaging 6.3 points per game in his first 17 games in his collegiate career.

last time out… Prince George's Community College dropped a 90-78 decision to Harford Community College in the Maryland JUCO Men's Basketball Quarterfinals on Feb. 16. Shiloh Beale paced the Owls with a career-high 21 points along with eight rebounds and four assists. The freshman shot 5-for-11 from the floor, 2 of 4 from behind the arc and 9 of 10 from the charity stripe for his first career 20-point performance. Beale has really come into his own in the last six games after posting double figures in all six games including 18 points or more in five of those tilts. Mykal Johnson and Gus Stone each added 17 points while Kennith Ford added 14 points and seven rebounds in their last contests at Novak Field House. Johnson has reached double figures in 53 of his 58 career game while Stone reached double figures for the 37th time in his career and Ford has 38 double-digit point games.

last time we met…  Gus Stone and Mykal Johnson combined for 39 points, 19 rebounds and 15 assists to propel Prince George's Community College past Westmoreland County Community College 82-69 on Nov. 18. Stone posted 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to narrowly miss his first double-double or triple-double. The sophomore shot 8-for-10 from the floor, 4-for-5 from behind the arc and 1 of 1 from the free throw line. Johnson registered 18 points and 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double while also notching seven assists and four steals on the afternoon. Johnson shot 7-for-9 from the floor and 4 of 4 from 3-point land. Kennith Ford also reached double figures for the Owls with 13 points while James Hagins hauled in eight rebounds and Tavon Ngangum dished out six assists in the winning effort.

all-conference recognition… Sophomore Mykal Johnson was named to the All-Maryland JUCO first team. Sophomore Gus Stone earned an All-Maryland JUCO second-team nod. Johnson ranks ninth in the league with 17.1 points per game. The sophomore has posted double figures in 26 of the 27 games this season including 11 games with at least 20 points and a 30-point performance against Chesapeake College on Dec. 14. Johnson has also registered double figures in rebounds eight times this season for eight double-doubles. The Seat Pleasant, Md., native also registered a triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Garrett College on Jan. 13. For his career, Johnson is seven points shy of the 1,000-point plateau going into the Owls game against Westmoreland County Community College on Saturday. He has posted double figures in points in 52 of 57 career games including 23 games with at least 20 points and three 30-point performances. He posted a career-high 36 points against Howard Community College on Jan. 25, 2017. Stone ranks sixth in the league with 18.1 points per game. Stone has posted double figures in points 21 times this season including 14 games with at least 20 points and two 30-point performances. He notched a career-high 33 points against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6. He also recorded 32 points and 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double against Garrett and finished the regular season by turning the trick twice. Stone is seven points shy of 800 for his career. He has found double figures 37 times in his career and has 22 games with at least 20 points and two 30-point performances.

next time on the hardwood…If the Largo program defeats Westmoreland County on Saturday, the squad would advance to Sunday's championship game at 3 p.m.

now that's a career day… Sophomore Shiloh Beale notched a career-high 21 points against Harford on Feb. 16.. Sophomore Brian Ferguson scored a career-high 11 points against Frederick on Jan. 24. Sophomore Kennith Ford has posted a career-high 26 points twice this season after reaching the mark against Cecil on Nov. 29 and again against Northern Virginia on Jan. 22. Ford has also grabbed a personal-best 10 boards twice this season after posting 10 caroms against Butler County on Nov. 17 and against the Nighthawks on Jan. 22. Sophomore James Hagins matched his career high of 23 points against Howard on Jan. 17 after posting a collegiate-best 23 points against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6.  The sophomore also posted a career-high 16 caroms against the Dragons. Sophomore Mykal Johnson dished out a career-high 10 assists on his way to his first collegiate triple-double while sophomore Gus Stone hauled in 10 rebounds on his way to his first career double-double in the contest against Garrett on Jan. 13. Johnson grabbed a career-best 15 boards against Dragons. Stone also registered a career-best 33 points against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6. Sophomore Paul Golder notched a Prince George's high of 22 points against Anne Arundel on Jan. 5. Golder registered a career-best 23 points twice last season at another junior college. Freshman Darren Rivers registered a career-best eight points and 13 rebounds against Potomac State on Dec. 2. Sophomore Tavon Ngangum (12 points) had a Prince George's highs against Allegany College of Maryland on Nov. 15.

 Sophomore Mykal Johnson has scored 20 points in a game 23 times and 30 points three in his career, including nine times this season. Sophomore Gus Stone has 21 20-point performances and reached 30 points in a game twice this season. Stone has scored at least 20 points in 15 games this season. Sophomore Kennith Ford has six career 20-point games on his resume including four this season while sophomore James Hagins posted 20 points twice this season with a pair of 23-point outburst. Freshman Shiloh Beale recorded 20 points for the first time in his career against Harford on Feb. 16 while sophomore Paul Golder reached 20 points for the first time in his Owls career against Anne Arundel on Jan. 5.

 Sophomore James Hagins has grabbed double figures in rebounds 13 times in his career including 11 times this season. Sophomore Mykal Johnson has hauled in 10+ rebounds eight times this season and freshman Darren Rivers has posted 10 caroms in a game twice this season while sophomore Kennith Ford has three double-figure rebound contest this season.

the dish…
 Sophomore Mykal Johnson became the first Owl player to register 10 assists in a game since Alex Morales handed out 13 assists against Allegany (Md.) on Jan. 13, 2017 when Johnson recorded 10 dimes against Garrett on Jan. 13, 2018. Johnson has handed out five or more assists five times this season and six times in his career. Sophomore Gus Stone has five 5+ assist games, including tilts with seven, eight and nine assists this season. Freshman Shiloh Beale has two six assists games this season and sophomore Tavon Ngangum has two games with at least five helpers on the year. Sophomore Kennith Ford has one five assist tilt in 2017-18.

double trouble… Sophomore James Hagins has posted eight double-doubles including turning the trick six times this season. Sophomore Mykal Johnson has eight double-doubles this season including six since the New Year hit. Sophomore Kennith Ford has turned the trick three times and fellow sophomore Gus Stone has one double-double this season.

triple trouble… Sophomore Mykal Johnson recorded a triple-double against Garrett after registering 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on Jan. 13. The 10 assists were a career best while the sophomore had two previous double-doubles before his triple threat against the Lakers.

nice to see you again…
 Sophomore Gus Stone has returned to the Owls for the 2017-18 season after playing in 2016-17. Stone ranked second on the team in his freshman campaign with 14.8 points per game and posted 20 double-figure performances including 11 games with 20 points or more.

that's gold, jerry, gold…
 Prince George's is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of Prince George's Athletics in 2017-18. Prince George's unveiled gold uniforms for men's soccer against Cecil on Sept. 15 as part of the 50th Anniversary of Prince George's Athletics, A Celebration of the Past, Present, And Future. The men's and women's basketball teams unveiled their gold jerseys for the doubleheader against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6 and will be wearing them for select games the rest of the season.

men's basketball tradition…
 The men's basketball team has won the Maryland JUCO Tournament four times (1971-72, 1979-80, 1980-81, 2016-17) and the NJCAA Region XX crown seven times (1990-91, 1992-93, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16).

about the coach… Head coach Brian Johnson begins his second season as the men's basketball head coach. He led the Owls to a 21-9 record last season, to the Maryland JUCO Tournament title and to the NJCAA Region XX Division III title game. The 21 wins marked the first 20-win season since 2013-14. Johnson was inducted into his high school (Mount St. Joseph) hall of fame in the fall of 2017. The Owls are 35-21 under Johnson in his two seasons at the helm.
