Owls Finish Regular Season With Sweep Over Garrett College

The Prince George's Community College Baseball team wrapped up their regular season this past Saturday, April 30th in a doubleheader against Garrett College. The Owls topped the Lakers 9-6 in game one before completing a 5-4 comeback in game two to earn the sweep. The Owls finish the regular season 13-24 overall and 7-18 in Maryland JUCO play under first year head coach Gene Bowles.

The Owls were slow to start off game one, allowing a solo shot homerun in the first inning and going scoreless themselves across the first two innings. Prince George's was able to connect offensively in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs and proceeded to rattle off two more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Prince George's then took advantage of a few errors by the Lakers in the fifth to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Garrett began to rally in the top of the sixth as they put up 5 runs to cut into the Owls lead. Prince George's was able to score one more in the sixth with a Dante Fairchild (Richmond, VA) homerun before Jose Alvarez (Tampa, FL) retired the Lakers in the seventh.

Joey Withers (Hattiesburg, MS) picked up the win for the Owls in game one. Jose Acevedo (Bladensburg, MD) finished with four RBIs and added two stolen bases.

Elijah Tyler (Bladensburg, MD) got the start on the mound for the Owls in game two, pitching the first five innings before being replaced by Alexander Arnold (Birmingham, AL) in the top of the sixth with the Owls down 3-1. Arnold made quick work of the Lakers bats as the Owls entered the bottom looking for an answer. Fairchild and Bennie Spady (Brandywine, MD) both had a 2-run homerun during the inning to give the Owls control 5-3 entering the final inning. The Lakers threatened, coming to within one with a single run homerun but the Owls picked up the final two outs with Ryan Ahalt (Pensacola, FL) on the mound.

The Owls picked up some much-needed momentum with the pair of wins ahead of the NJCAA Region 20 Division III Tournament next weekend, May 6th-8th. Prince George's swept both opponents CCAC Allegheny and tournament host Westmoreland at home earlier in the season. The Owls await the tournament format to determine who they'll first play in Youngwood, Pennsylvania with a chance to reclaim the Region Title for the first time since the 2019 season.
