Owls Split Doubleheader Against Cecil College, Earn First Win Of The Year Under Head Coach Gene Bowles

The Prince George's Community College baseball team picked up their first win of the season in game two of Thursday's doubleheader against Cecil College on March 3rd. The Seahawks won game one 5-4 before the Owls rallied in game two, 12-4.

After three and a half scoreless innings in game one the Owls got on the board first, putting up all four of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. Luis Cedeno and Jose Alvarez both went 2-for-3 at the plate with each adding a run as well. Christian Rivera went 1-for-3 with one run scored and Dante Fairchild went 1-for-2 and rounded out the scoring for the Owls with one run. Alvarez finished with 2 RBI's.

Tanner Perkes continued to pitch a shutout through the fifth inning before he ran out of steam. The Seahawks put up five runs in the sixth to take the 5-4 lead before Elijah Tyler came in to relieve Perkes. Prince George's defense held the Seahawks in check in the top of the seventh but were unable to tie things up at-bat, sealing the 5-4 victory for the Seahawks.

Game two saw Joey Withers get the start on the mound for the Owls. Withers pitched three scoreless innings for Prince George's before being replaced by Carlos Sepulveda in the fourth. Meanwhile, the Owls offense opened the game with three runs in both the first and second innings to take control 6-0 before Cecil scored three themselves in the fourth as Sepulveda initially struggled.  Prince George's responded with a two-run fifth inning and four-run sixth inning while holding off the Seahawks bats to enter the final inning with a 12-3 lead.

Cecil opened up the seventh with a solo homer before Sepulveda walked the next Seahawk before the following batter grounded into a double-play at second and their final at-bat ended with a fly-out into left field.

The Owls moved to 1-5 on the year with the split while Cecil dropped to 4-6. Thursday's victory also marked the first for coach Gene Bowles as head of the program. Bowles, who previously spent time as an assistant coach for the Owls, returned to Prince George's this past summer to fill the head coaching vacancy. Despite a rough start to the season for the Owls, they've continued to play games through the very end. Bowles' team showed their resiliency in game two after the Seahawks came from behind to steal game one.

The Owls will face Cecil College again next week on Wednesday, March 9th for a non-conference doubleheader in North East, MD. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
