Spady’s Walk-Off, Jimenez’s Grand Slam Propel Owls In Sweep Over Montgomery

The Prince George's Community College baseball team picked up two wins in thrilling fashion over visiting Montgomery College on Saturday, April 10th. The Owls completed a 10-9 comeback win capped off with a walk-off homerun in the seventh inning of game one before holding off the Raptors 9-7 in game two to complete the sweep. The Owls improved to 8-17 on the year, including 4-11 in Maryland JUCO while the Raptors drop to 12-23, 5-13.

Prince George's started off strong in game one, holding off the Raptors in the first inning while the Owls put up three runs to take an early lead. Montgomery quickly erased their deficit as they put up seven runs in the second frame but the Owls managed two more to stay within reach, 7-5. The Raptors added two more in the third while keeping Prince George's off the board until the sixth inning with an Elias Nurideen (Bowie, MD) sacrifice fly to send Bennie Spady (Brandywine, MD) across the plate to head into the final inning down 9-6.

The Owls did their job on defense, quickly getting off the field to give their bats a chance in the seventh down three. Prince George's wasted no time in the rally, collecting three straight hits as they cut the Raptors lead to just two before Spady stepped up to the plate. Spady, facing a full 3-2 count against his former team, proceeded to knock the next pitch over the fence to walk it off for the Owls. Spady had a career day for Prince George's as he finished game one 3-for-4 from the plate, picking up 5 RBI's. Jose Alvarez (Tampa, FL) earned the win on the mound for the Owls.

Joey Withers (Hattiesburg,MS) got the start in game two as the Owls held off the Raptors in inning one and scored two runs in the bottom to take another early lead. The Raptors again responded in the second as they piled up four runs to take control 4-2. The Owls first two batters both reached base on balls before Luis Cedeno (Kissimmee, FL) laid down a bunt and was able to reach first to load the bases. Santiago Jimenez (Bayonne, NJ), the Owls biggest hitter, followed up with his second grand slam of the season to retake control for Prince George's 6-4. Jimenez leads the team with 7 homeruns on the season after Sunday's games.

The Raptors tied things up at 7 in the sixth inning but Prince George's again rallied in the bottom, tacking on two more runs to head into the final inning with a 9-7 lead. Ryan Ahalt (Pensacola, FL) replaced Withers on the bump and closed out the game to complete the sweep for Prince George's.

The Owls will now have a few days off before they travel to Wye Mills, MD to take on Chesapeake College on Wednesday, April 13th. First pitch is set for 2 PM.
