Owls Drop Two At Home To Allegany, Look To Rebound On The Road Against Hagerstown This Weekend

The Prince George's Community College baseball team was swept at home by Division II opponent Allegany College of Maryland on Tuesday afternoon, April 13th. The Trojans took game one by a score of 16-5 before coming back late in the second game to steal the win, 11-9. The pair of losses brings the Owls current losing streak to five games. Prince George's will have a few days of practice before they attempt to right the ship on Saturday, April 17th when the team travels to Hagerstown Community College for a noon doubleheader.

The Owls kept even with the Trojans in the first inning when sophomore OF Trey Newland again led off with a solo homer to match the Trojans one run in the top of the first. The solo homerun marked the second time Newland had led off with the same such result, the first time occurring one week prior during which the Owls topped Montgomery 4-3. This time around Prince George's struggled to keep up as they managed to score only four more runs the remainder of the game compared to the Trojans 15 to finish off the Owls 16-5.

Game two appeared to be heading toward the same result as the Trojans high-powered offense put up 8 runs in the top of the second inning alone as pitching struggles continued to trouble the Owls. Sophomore second baseman Aderlyn Cubilete responded for the Owls by hitting a triple to kickstart the offense in the bottom of the second before Patrick Hely and Grayson Lewis later brought home Cubilete and Manelson Blanco. Trailing six, the Owls made quick work of the Trojans offense in the next three innings, allowing zero runs on only one hit while scoring seven runs themselves to take the lead 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth. Highlighting the 7-0 run for the Owls was a massive grand slam by another sophomore outfielder, Wynston Dyer who had been struggling to find the ball prior to his game changing 4-run homer.

Unfortunately for the Owls, the Trojans were able to capitalize on a few late mistakes by Prince George's to reclaim the lead 11-9 after scoring three in the top of the sixth. The Owls generated some offense in the sixth, with a man reaching second before Allegany retired the last batter who struck out looking. Needing three runs to take back the lead and steal the win in the bottom of the seventh, Prince George's looked primed for the upset as they loaded the bases with two outs remaining before the Owls final two batters went down swinging, finalizing the 11-9 loss.

The Trojans improved to 16-12 (10-9 MD JUCO) with the win while the Owls fell to 2-6 (2-6 MD JUCO) on the year. Prince George's will have a few days to look ahead and readjust before they travel to Hagerstown for a matchup with the top ranked team in the conference against the Hawks.
