Owls Complete Sweep of Frederick With A Pair Of Comeback Wins

Prince George's Community College baseball entered Saturday's doubleheader versus Frederick with some momentum coming off their much-needed win against CCBC Essex earlier in the week. The Owls would go on to turn that momentum into a pair of wins against the Cougars, including a dramatic finish to game one which ended with a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning by sophomore Peyton Harmon.

The Owls trailed early in game one as pitching struggles continued, allowing Frederick to capitalize on offense as they cushioned their lead. Entering the bottom of the fourth inning down 7-1, Prince George's was able to cut the Cougars lead to four with two runs by Wynston Dyer and Cristian Desrosiers. Sophomore Ryan Manahand entered in relief at the top of the fifth inning and executed his job to near perfection, allowing only one hit the remainder of the game which gave the Owls a chance to further cut into the Cougars lead. After a scoreless bottom fifth the Owls scored two more in the sixth to make things interesting entering the top of the seventh, trailing by only two.

Manahand continued to get the job done as he struck out two batters and was aided by a popup to his shortstop Jacob Willis to allow Prince George's a chance in the final half-inning. An Ivan Suarez single into center field allowed Aderlyn Cubilete to reach home and put the pressure on Frederick who led by just one run at this point. After a quick second out, Grayson Lewis delivered a base hit to third and fully extended at the bag just barely reaching first base while Tyler Kemp who came in to pinch run for Suarez, was able to move to third.

Lewis felt good enough about his speed on the play that he decided to steal second which placed the winning run in scoring position for the Owls. That's when the aforementioned Harmon stepped up and delivered. Harmon, who has struggled at the plate all year up to this point faced a 3-1 count with two outs before he swung at a high pitch and connected, driving the ball deep into left field. The Cougars left fielder made every attempt to grab the final out but Harmon placed the ball just out of reach, allowing Kemp to cross the plate before Lewis quickly rounded third and slid home to complete the Owls comeback, 8-7.

Game two started off similar to the first as the Owls quickly found themselves down 3-0 as they took their chance at the plate for the first time. Prince George's came out swinging themselves as they made it through the entire batting order to put up six runs to take the lead 6-3 entering the second. The Owls didn't slow down the rest of the game, recording at least one run in each of the remaining innings. The Cougars were able to cut the lead to five at the top of the sixth before the Owls put up another two runs and closed out Frederick in seven, 15-8. Harmon finished the day on the mound and came off the field for the second time celebrating with a win.

The Cougars dropped to 11-8, 11-8 MD JUCO with the pair of losses while the Owls improved to 5-9, 5-9 with the sweep.
