Coach Foster, Owls Baseball Set To Travel To Westmoreland To Determine Region XX Winner

Prince George's Community College Baseball will head into their matchup well-rested for a doubleheader divisional showdown against Westmoreland County Community College on Tuesday, May 11th. The final regular season games for both teams will act as the NJCAA Division III Region XX Tournament as a result of other colleges within the division being unable to field a team this season due to COVID. This has left Westmoreland and Prince George's as the only two teams within the division, setting up an intriguing final matchup of the shortened 2020-21 baseball season.

In the event the doubleheader results in a split, the Owls will return to Westmoreland this weekend to play one final winner-take-all 9-inning game. The winner will decide who gets the opportunity to represent Region 20 in the Mid-Atlantic District Championship hosted by the winner of Region 10 on May 21-22*.

*Since this article has been released, Rockingham Community College of Region 10 has captured their third consecutive Region 10 trophy over Mother's Day weekend. This means the winner of the best-of-three series between Prince George's and Westmoreland this week will determine who travels to Wentworth, North Carolina the weekend of May 21st to take on Rockingham's Eagles in the Mid-Atlantic District Championship. Districts will also consist of a best-of-three format between the two teams.

With the COVID-shortened season, Westmoreland has been forced to play a majority of their opponents from the brutal Maryland JUCO schedule that the Owls are accustomed to facing nearly every year. The Wolfpack has been able to witness first-hand what Prince George's has had to compete with each year, as Westmoreland has struggled on their way to a 2-18 record against MD JUCO schools. Meanwhile, Prince George's has been able to hold their own as a Division III institution that started their season nearly a month after their opponents with a respectable 8-10 record including a sweep over Division II powerhouse Frederick.

On paper both Prince George's and Westmoreland have posted similar batting numbers with the Wolfpack boasting a slightly better batting average of .319 vs .307 for the Owls while Prince George's has a .428 on base percentage compared to .415 for Westmoreland. The Owls also hold the advantage on the mound with an 8.77 ERA despite a small list of natural pitchers on Prince George's roster which has been led by sophomore Logan Marx.

The Owls have been able to flip the script on their season as of late, winning six of their last nine after dropping seven of their first nine. Prince George's will look to stay hot and jump out early against the Wolfpack who was on a four-game skid before sweeping Kent State-Tuscarawas of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) on May 2nd. Game one of Tuesday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
