Westmoreland Tops Prince George’s To End The Owls Season

After a quick start in the first inning which saw the Owls jump out to an early 2-0 lead, Prince George's stalled down the stretch as Westmoreland piled up six runs on their way to a 6-2 victory on Saturday. The loss ends the season for the Owls who finish the year with a 9-12 overall record.

A Cristian Desrosiers double and a later Aderlyn Cubilete sacrifice fly earned the Owls first two runs as the bats looked to be connecting for Prince George's early on. The Owls threatened to score again in the second but were unsuccessful as they left three men on base to end the inning. Logan Marx was able to keep the Wolfpack off the board until the fifth inning when Westmoreland capitalized on an error by the Owls, scoring two runs of their own to tie up the contest 2-2.

The Wolfpack would explode in the sixth inning as they scored four more runs on three hits to nearly match the Owls total hits for the entire game (4). Prince George's was able to stop the bleeding for the remainder of the day as they held Westmoreland in check down the stretch but were unable to get anything going offensively. The Owls managed to get one hit in the 8th inning on a Cubilete single but just couldn't seem to find the ball like they were able to do early on, sealing the 6-2 loss to end the season.

The loss ended the Owls quest as the NJCAA Division III Region XX winner for the fourth straight year. Westmoreland is the first school other than Prince George's to represent the region in Districts since 2016 when Montgomery College beat the Owls in the Region Championship game.

The loss also marked the final game for longtime Owls head coach David "Buddy" Foster. Foster, who has been with Prince George's for thirteen total years including the last ten as head coach of the baseball program, had decided before the season began that this would be his last year. Foster had revived the struggling program during his tenure which saw multiple Region XX titles, and two World Series appearances (2014, 2017) to go along with numerous awards for student-athletes as well as coaching awards along the way. Coach Buddy's presence will be missed by all at Prince George's Community College who will return to the diamond next season under new leadership.

More information regarding Foster's achievements and legacy will be shared shortly.
