Strong Second Half Lifts Owls Over Allegany

Strong Second Half Lifts Owls Over Allegany

Prince George's Community College men's soccer returned to Largo for their first home match in two weeks on Tuesday, needing a win after dropping back-to-back games on the road the week prior. A scoreless first half in poor conditions against divisional opponent Allegany College of Maryland made it appear that the Owls offensive drought would continue. Instead as conditions worsened after halftime, the Owls found their stride on offense as the team rattled off four unanswered goals against the Trojans en route to a 4-1 victory.

Despite the Owls threatening to score in the first half the Trojans were able to hold strong on defense as keeper Nkenge Durham corralled 6 saves on 10 Prince George's shots. The Owls defense was able to hold Allegany in check as well, allowing just one shot which Daniel Villatoro-Ramos was able to keep out of goal.

With the rain picking up over halftime Prince George's settled down in the second half as they were forced to slow things down and play the simple pass which often brought them deep into Trojans territory. Jorge Santacruz, Francis Ogbankwa, and Jonathan Diaz all managed to score within ten minutes of one another after Santacruz opened up the scoring for the Owls in the 49th minute of play. Brian Gomez-Martinez picked up his first goal of the season in the 76th minute with a driving shot past the Trojan's keeper to put the Owls in full control 4-0 with 13 minutes to play. Allegany avoided the shutout late after a rebounded ball in Owls territory found the back of the net with only a few minutes remaining before the final horn sounded.

The win brings the Owls to 4-5 on the year and 1-1 in Region 20 Division 3 play. Prince George's is back on the road on Thursday, October 6th against Howard Community College. Kickoff is slated for 4 pm.
