Prince George's Men's Basketball Wins NJCAA Region XX Division III Championship For Eighth Time In Program History

LARGO, Md. – Dexter Turner (Washington, D.C./Idea Public Charter) made only one shot on the day, but it gave Prince George's Community College the lead it would not relinquish on their way to a 73-68 win against Anne Arundel Community College and hand the Owls the 2019 NJCAA Region XX Division III Tournament title.

With the win, Prince George's will head to Sandhills Community College for the NJCAA District VII Championships in Pinehurst, N.C. on March 2-3. If the Owls can win two games to claim the district title, they will move onto the NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championships at the UCR Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minn., on March 14-16.

Turner broke a 50-all standstill with a trey at 11:38 to give the hosts the lead for good. The Riverhawks would cut the margin to a point twice, but Jordan Hicks (Largo, Md./Henry Wise) and Miles Weaver (Alexandria, Va./Takoma Academy) each had big baskets to restore a two possession lead. Weaver hit two big 3-pointers down the stretch to extend the advantage and finished the game by tying his career high of 13 points.

Weaver, who averaged 10.5 points per game In the tournament, was named to the All-Tournament team. The freshman also had 13 points against CCBC Dundalk on November 20 and registered five double-figure point games this season. Turner finished with three points, eight assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Alex Morales (Paterson, N,.J./Manchester Regional)`was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player after posting 23 points and 15 rebounds in the title game. He recorded 22 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in the semifinal win against Pennsylvania Highlands on Saturday. The sophomore averaged 22.5 points and 14.0 rebounds to lead the team to its eighth region title.

Tunde Scrivner (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the championship game. The freshman averaged 17.0 points per game over the weekend to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team with Weaver.

Trailing 10-4. The Owls went on a 25-9 run to open up a 29-19 lead with 4:10 left in the first half after a Weaver trey. Morales and Scrivner each had nine points to power the spurt. Prince George's went into the locker room with a 37-28 lead.

Anne Arundel opened the second half one a 14-2 run to grab a 42-39 edge four minutes into the final stanza.

The two teams then traded the lead a couple of times over the next four minutes before Turner gave the hosts the lead for good. Turner started a 16-9 run that propelled the Owls to the win. Weaver had six points in the run en route to a 73-68 victory.

Hicks added nine points in the win.

The Largo team won the region title for the first time since 2015-16 and eighth time overall. The Owls have also won the NJCAA Region XX Division III titles in 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15 while also claiming Division II crowns in 1990-91, 1992-93 and 2007-08.

Prince George's will be playing in the NJCAA District VII for the second-straight year. Prince George's will be participating in the district tournament for the sixth time in the last eight years. The last time the Owls advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament was 2007-08 when the team was still a member of the NJCAA Division II.
