Owls Softball Picks Up First Win of the Season

The Owls Softball Team picked up their first win of the season on Monday, February 18 versus the Gulls of Rappahannock Community College in the All Seasons Softball Event held in Richmond, VA. Freshman pitcher, Shannon Peters, notched the win in the circle allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while facing 29 batters.

The Owls were able to play solid defense in the top of the first to hold off the Gulls. With one out the Gulls second batter hit a frozen rope to right center field. Sophomore CF Angela Figueroa ran the ball down at the fence then hit cut off SS Straneika Proctor who made a great relay throw to 3B Kerri Moore who was able to lay the tag on the runner trying to stretch the play into a triple.

The Owls started off the scoring in the top of the third. Canesha Marshall (OF) was hit by a pitch, then advanced on a stolen base to second and wild pitch to third. Freshman short stop, Stranieka Proctor, then walked, bringing up sophomore Kerri Moore (3B). Moore laid down an unexpected squeeze bunt scoring Marshall. Ashley Hawkins then lifted a towering fly ball to left field which was misplayed allowing Proctor to score.

Rappahannock came back in the bottom of the 6th with two runs off of three hits and an error. But the Owls were able to answer back in the top of the 7th with a 2 out rally started with Moore being hit by a pitch and then advancing to second on a wild pitch. Hawkins then works a full count and drives a 2 base line drive to the opposite field off a pitch that RCC was trying to throw off the plate to walk her, scoring Moore.  Peters follows on a first pitch line drive single to left center scoring Hawkins.  The Owls then retired the Gulls in a 1-2-3 inning off of two ground balls to 3B (Moore) and one to P (Peters).

The Owls went 1-4 on the long weekend battling extreme cold weather conditions. Hawkins lead the team offensively hitting .308 followed by Moore and Proctor each hitting .273. Peters and Proctor each had their first collegiate home runs off of UVA Club team and VCU Club team respectively. Figueroa (1.000) and Moore (.950) lead the team defensively.

The Owls open at home on Wednesday, March 6 versus Virginia University of Lynchburg.
