College Athletic Teams Earn Proclamation

College Athletic Teams Earn Proclamation

On Tuesday June 17, 2014 the Prince George's Community College men’s basketball, men and women track and field, and baseball teams were recognized by the county council for their outstanding performance for the 2013/2014 season. Council member Derrick Leon Davis and Council chairman Mel Franklin were among the members who presented the award and congratulatory speeches.

The Men’s basketball team was awarded for winning the NJCAA Region XX Division III Championship; Men’s track and field member Uchena Oparakau won the NJCAA Division III National Championship; Women’s track earned 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 8 Bronze Medals to earn their coach Richard Johnson the NJCAA Division National Coach of the Year Award for the 1st in school history and the Baseball team won the Region XX Championship and advanced to the College World Series.

Representatives from the college included Dr. Lee, vice president, Dr. Jacqueline Brown, Director of Community & Govt. Affairs and Melissa Miller, Supervisor of Athletic Operations. Coaches included Rick Johnson and Jimmy Williams from track and field and baseball respectively.  

The award was officially presented to Chris Brown current pitcher and member of the 2013/2014 Baseball team that made it to the College World Series this past season. He was proud to receive the award on behalf of the named athletic programs.

The ceremony took place in the council hearing room in the county administration building, Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
