Owls Take 1st Round Win from AACC

The Men's basketball team at Prince George's Community College is currently ranked 4th in the MD JUCO conference and have won their 11th consecutive game against Anne Arundel Community College.  This game was close the entire game, with the Owls never leading by more than 8 points and Anne Arundel never leading be more than 4 points.  The final score was 72-64 in favor of the Owls.

This game was extremely competitive, with 9 lead changes and 6 ties throughout the 40 minutes played.  The Owls defeated Anne Arundel last season to become the Region XX Champions in an equally challenging game.  When chatting with Head Coach Xavier Joyner after the game, he expressed his respect for AACC's head coach, saying, "I knew coming into this game it was going to be very competitive, a down to the wire game, I have great respect for the Head Coach Tom Smith with his strategies and his motivational techniques, so I knew his team is always going to play very hard."

This game showed the reality that the men are playing very unselfishly and are acting like the team that they are.  In the final 2 minutes of the game, knowing every second and play counted, they worked with each other to achieve the final goal of a victory.  4 players contributed key plays to help achieve this goal.  It started with #4 sophomore Deandre Leatherwood putting in an exciting dunk at 2 minutes left, then #11 freshman Gabriel McCray put in a lay-in, which led to #2 sophomore NieRonn Miles to get a quick lay-in.  As AACC continued to foul to stop the game clock, #10 freshman Lamont Short scored 4 free throws, finishing the game.

This was the Owls final regular season home game; therefore, it was the teams Sophomore Day. Following the game the athletics department and coach recognized the sophomores: #1 Tyler Logan, #2 NieRonn Miles, #3 Abeeb Ayodeji, #4 Deandre Leatherwood, and #5 David Duncan.  Leatherwood is ranked 1st overall in the MD JUCO for field goal shooting percentage at 64.4%. Duncan is ranked 2nd in total rebound per game with 10.6.  Logan is ranked 17th in total points per game with 16.2.  Miles is ranked 20th in 3 point shooting percentage at 39.4%.  And Ayodeji constantly plays hard and aggressive, contributing to the teams many victories.

Thank you for constantly supporting the Owls season this year!  Make sure you go cheer on the Owls in the second round of the MD JUCO tournament on Friday February 15th at 7 PM at Harford Community College.  The game is hosted by the #5 seed Harford Community College, PGCC is seed 4.
