Men’s Basketball Finds Silver Lining In Regular Season Finale Loss To Hagerstown, Shift Focus To Postseason Play

Prince George's men's basketball traveled to Hagerstown Community College on Monday, February 17th to take on Hagerstown's Hawks in a Maryland JUCO matchup for the Owls final regular season game of the 2019-20 season. In a tight battle which saw nine lead changes by the final whistle, the Owls ultimately fell to the Hawks 90-73. The defeat drops the Owls overall record to 16-8 including 6-7 in conference play. Despite the loss, Owls sophomore Tunde Scrivner was able to take a moment to reflect on his time so far at Prince George's Community College as he recorded his 1,000th career point during the contest.

The incredible feat was perhaps tough to recognize in an Owls loss, but deserved to be acknowledged nonetheless after such an accomplishment. Entering the matchup needing only 13 points to reach the 1,000-point mark in the Owls final regular season game, Scrivner was sitting at 999 career points for nearly 7 minutes as the game was winding down before he drilled a three-pointer with 1:31 remaining to put him over the mark and move his total career points to 1,002. Scrivner ended up with 17 points by the end, bringing his total career points to 1,004 as the Owls turn their attention to defending their Region XX Division III title this coming weekend.

Prince George's got off to a sluggish start as they fell behind in the first few minutes before catching the Hawks at the 13:26 mark after an Isaiah Miles made three-point shot put the Owls up 14-13. The Owls then later went on a 8-0 run to take a 24-18 lead with 7 minutes remaining in the half. Hagerstown responded with a run of their own to send the Owls into halftime trailing 38-34. Miles led all scorers at the break with 17 points including 3-5 from beyond the arc.

Prince George's continued to pressure Hagerstown after the break as they came to within 3 points of the Hawks early on in the second half. Despite the Owls persistence, the Hawks responded each time with a basket of their own as they shot lights out in the second half, connecting on over 70% (19-27) of their shots in the final twenty minutes. Trailing by double digits with the game coming to a close, Scrivner saw his chance to join the 1,000 point club as he dialed up a trey to push his career total over the threshold before the Owls ultimately fell to the Hawks, 90-73. Miles finished as the Owls leading scorer with 24 points while grabbing 7 boards. Scrivner finished with 17 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds in the loss.

With the regular season now in the rearview mirror, Prince George's will look ahead to this coming weekend where the Owls will travel to Youngwood, Pennsylvania for the NJCAA Region XX Division III Basketball Tournament held at Westmoreland County Community College. The Owls enter as the number one seed and will play the winner of the number five seeded Westmoreland and number four seeded Pennsylvania Highlands who play on Friday, February 21st. The Owls will face the winner the following day at 4 pm.
