Prince George's Alex Morales, Mykal Johnson And Jaylin Johnson Receive NJCAA All-Region XX Men's Basketball Recognition

LARGO, Md. – Freshman Alex Morales (Patterson, N.J.), a member of the Prince George's Community College men's basketball team, has been selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III All-Region XX first-team, announced on Thursday.

Fellow freshman Mykal Johnson (Landover, Md.) received All-Region XX second-team honors and sophomore Jaylin Johnson (Detroit, Mich.) was selected as an All-Region XX honorable mention.

Morales, a 6-6 guard, continues to pick up honors in his first season in an Owls uniform after also receiving All-Maryland JUCO second-team honors, a  Maryland JUCO Tournament MVP and all-tournament honors. The freshman ranked second on the team with 13.8 points and a team-best 9.9 rebounds per game and shot 46.9 percent from the field. Morales helped Prince George's to its first Maryland JUCO Tournament title since 1981 by scoring the game-winning jumper with six seconds left in a 63-62 win against Baltimore City Community College in the championship game on Feb. 19. The Patterson, N.J., native averaged 19.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game in the three-game tournament, including registering 22 points and 11 rebounds in an 81-71 victory against Garrett Community College in the quarterfinals on Feb. 17 and 20 points and 17 rebounds against Baltimore City in the title bout. Morales posted double figures in points 18 times this season, including five 20-point performances. He notched a career-high 28 points in a 106-94 win against Howard Community College on Jan. 25. The top rebounder on the team registered 11 double-doubles on the year and posted 14 double-figure rebound games including six contests with 15 boards or more. Morales grabbed a career-best 20 caroms against the Navy JV team on Dec. 5.

Mykal Johnson, a 6-3 guard/forward, was also named to the All-Maryland JUCO second team and was selected to the Maryland JUCO all-tournament team to go along with his All-Region XX second-team selection. Mykal Johnson paced the team with 17.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. The local product from Landover powered the team in 3-point field goal percentage (37.4) and free throw percentage (73.2). Mykal Johnson scored double digits in 26 of the 30 games this season with 12 20-point performances and two games with 30 points. Just like Morales, he posted a career high in points against Howard with 36 points in the victory. In the MD JUCO Tournament, Mykal Johnson averaged 19.3 points per game, including 20 points both the quarterfinals win against Garrett and in the championship contest against Baltimore City.

Jaylin Johnson, who was named to the NJCAA Division III Region XX all-tournament team, earns his first season recognition with the All-Region XX honorable mention selection. The Detroit, Mich., native ranked third on the team with 10.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. The 6-1 guard, posted 14 games with at least 10 points including three 20-point performances. The sophomore notched a career-high 23 points in an 88-74 win against the College of Southern Maryland and was a key part of the Owls second half comeback against Montgomery College in the second half with 20 points after trailing by 14 points going into the locker room in the 98-85 loss on Sunday.

Prince George's finished 21-9 in head coach Brian Johnson's first season in Landover to notch the team's first 20-win season since 2013-14. The Owls won the Maryland JUCO Tournament for the fourth time and the first time since 1980-81.
