
Knights Emerge Victorious After Hard Fought Battle with Prince George's Community College
The CCBC Essex Knights Women's Basketball (19-1) (7-0) team traveled to Largo, Maryland for their rematch vs the Prince George Community College Owls. The teams faced off less than three weeks ago on Jan 22nd, with the Knights being able to get the job done defeating the Owls 88-63. The Knight's managed to secure the season sweep today, defeating the Owls in a hard-fought battle 74-66.
The Knights came out aggressively in the first quarter, managing to get to the line early and often. By the end of the period, they had already attempted 12 free throws, draining seven. Seven different Knights scored as well. This, along with their outstanding three point shooting (4-5) allowed them to build a 25-14 lead.
In the second quarter, the Owls began to find their rhythm offensively. They outscored the Knights 21-15 for the quarter. Despite this, the Knights still were able to head into halftime with a 40-35 lead.
In the third quarter, both teams struggled to score efficiently, but there was one thing that was evident. The Knights were going to continue to be aggressive. They got to the line eight times in the period, going 4-8. It was only a matter of time before those shots started falling.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Knights held on to a slim 57-55 lead. The Knights continued to find their way to the line. Gissel "Gigi" Gamble scored 10 points in the quarter, going 6-7 from the line. As a team, the Knights went 11-15 from the line in the quarter. Their defense also stood tall, holding the Owls to 11 points on 4-15 shooting. These efforts allowed the Knights to secure a hard-fought victory.
One of the keys to the game was the Knights' ability to get to the line. The Knights kept the Owls in foul trouble, with PGCC finishing with 28 total fouls in the game. This allowed the Knights to go 25-39 from the line. Gamble led the charge as she finished with 25 points, going 13-15 from the line. Azareya Whiting was a commanding presence as well, as she finished with the most offensive rebounds (six) and total rebounds (11) in the game.
The Knights will look to grab win number 20 of the season and remain undefeated at home Tuesday when they take on Montgomery College. Tip off is set for 6:00 PM.
