Cardinals Miss Opportunity Against Prince George's

The CCBC Catonsville women's basketball team suffered their third loss of the season Wednesday night, falling to the Owls of Prince George's Community College by a final score of 58-55.

In a showdown between the top two teams in Region 20, the Cardinals lost a heartbreaker as sophomore shooting guard Cache Waters (Western) missed a game-tying three pointer as time expired. The loss drops Catonsville to 5-3 (2-1) on the season.

The evening started off rough for the Cardinals, as Catonsville found themselves in a ten-point hole right off the bat. Trailing 12-2 midway through the first quarter, the Cardinals managed to capitalize on nine Owl turnovers to pull within six points after the first.

The second quarter saw an improved performance from the Cardinals, who outscored PG County 14-13. Catonsville's defense held the Owls to 0 for 7 from three point range, and gobbled up 16 rebounds. Heading into the half, the Cardinals trailed 28-23, well within striking distance.

Things got hairy in the third quarter, as both teams began getting into foul trouble. The physical play of the Owls was matched well by the Cardinals, but Catonsville continued to struggle with connecting on their shots. The momentum changed when freshman power forward Ethel Keys-Kamani (Bladensburg), who had left the game earlier in the quarter with an ankle injury, returned to the court and immediately made a crucial steal. Keys-Kamani was fouled four straight times by the Owls, adding five points to make the score 40-33 in favor of PG County.

Despite leading into the fourth, the Owls began to struggle as Catonsville closed in. With 4:49 left, freshman guard Sidney Spence (BK Law Tech) connected from three-point range to make it a one-point game. Keys-Kamani gave the Cardinals the lead off a pair of free throws. Prince George's began to pull away again, only for Catonsville to make it a three point game with 28 seconds left as Waters connected on a layup. After the Owls missed a pair of free throws, the Cardinals had one last chance to tie the game, but Waters missed the game-tying three by inches.

Sophomore point guard Morgan Gause (Oldfields) finished the night as the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 13 points, while Waters added 10 from the bench. Waters also led the Cardinals with nine rebounds and five steals.

Next up for the Cardinals is a road game against Chesapeake College on Friday, December 3.
