McHenry, MD – The Lady Lakers, needing a huge upset to solidify their postseason hopes, put themselves in position to do just that Saturday afternoon. Prince George's Community College, however, used an 8-0, fourth-quarter run to hold off host Garrett College, 66-56.
"We needed that one," lamented GC women's basketball head coach JT Lewis, whose squad is currently ninth in NJCAA Division II Region 20 with the top eight qualifying for the postseason.
The Lady Lakers (8-9 overall, 2-7 region) closed to within 49-47 on Manuela Perez de Castro's layup off a Hailey Newsome feed with 8:01 remaining in the contest. PG (16-4, 8-1) responded with its 8-0 run, which included three hoops from Nia Grymes (23 points).
Perez de Castro (eight rebounds) finished with a team-high 21 points and Renee Timbers added 17, but the rest of the squad combined for just 18 points. PG survived a tough Lady Laker zone in part due to the effectiveness of Tami Washington (game-high 24 points, six 3-pointers), who opened up the middle for the Owls down the stretch.
"We started closing out on that [Washington's 3-pointers] hard, and they did a good job attacking the middle and not settling for 'threes' at the end," said Lewis.
The Owls, who built a 30-24 halftime lead as Washington scored 16 first-half points, stretched their advantage to 46-37. Timbers, however, brought GC back with 46-43 by hitting a 3-point shot and then converting a three-point play to end the third quarter.
Washington nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing to open the fourth quarter, but Janiya Burton (eight points, four rebounds) hit a jumper and Perez de Castro converted the layup that brought GC within 49-47.
Grymes hit consecutive jumpers to stop the Garrett run. After Washington hit a jump shot, Grymes nailed another jumper to complete the 8-0 scoring spree and give the Owls a 57-47 cushion.
GC, which has only a non-divisional game with Allegany College of Maryland remaining on its schedule, is now in scoreboard-watching mode. The Lady Lakers need CCBC-Catonsville – currently seeded eighth in Region 20 – to stumble down the stretch if GC is to make the regional tournament.
Notes: Da'shai Morton-Hall had six points for the Lakers. Newsome finished with four points, six rebounds, and four steals.
