Howard Foul Trouble Leads to Big Win for Prince George’s Women’s Basketball

Prince George's women's basketball got back on track with a huge win over Maryland JUCO rival Howard Community College on Wednesday evening, December 4th. Prince George's edged the Dragons with a final score of 76-73 after the Owls erased a 15 point deficit over the final 6:36 of play to steal the win from Howard. The Owls improve to 5-4 on the season, including 1-3 in conference play while Howard falls to 7-3 overall, 1-2 in MD JUCO. Howard got into foul trouble early which resulted in the Dragons having to play a man down late and allowed the Owls to begin their comeback.

After an impressive first period which saw the Owls lead 17-13, 11 points coming solely from freshman guard Trinity Workman, Prince George's stumbled in the second period highlighted by an 18-3 run by the Dragons to claim the lead. The Owls were consistent in getting to the line during the first two periods but were able to turn it up a notch in the final two periods, earning a season high 29 chances from the charity stripe over the final twenty minutes to close the gap and ultimately take the lead.

Entering the final period down 56-49, it appeared as if Prince George's was headed for their fifth consecutive loss when they were able to put together a 13-2 run followed by the fifth Dragons player fouling out with 2:06 remaining, leaving only four girls eligible to take the floor for Howard. The Owls were able to take advantage of their man up opportunity and close out the game over the final minutes to escape with a 76-73 victory aided by 43 total trips to the free throw line. Prince George's relied on their ability to fire off plenty of shots, outshooting the Dragons 90 to 55 which also forced Howard to foul and subsequently led to plenty of foul trouble. The Owls Tatiana Garvin (22 points, 12 rebounds) & Kori People (13 points, 12 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles while Workman also poured in 21 points. Garvin shot an extremely efficient 12 of 13 from the line in the win.

The Owls earn a much needed win against Howard before their next matchup Saturday against Butler County Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm at Novak Field House
