Prince George’s Late Comeback Attempt Not Enough As Owls Fall to Cecil College

Prince George's women's basketball suffered another loss Saturday afternoon, November 23rd  when Cecil College visited Novak Field House and defeated the Owls 80-72. The Owls now fall to 4-3 on the season including 0-2 in Maryland JUCO play. Cecil's Seahawks improve to 2-1 on the year, 1-0 in Maryland JUCO.

The first period was extremely close as the score would agree, with both squads putting up similar numbers which resulted in a 16-16 tie heading into the second period. During the first period, the Owls went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-13 lead with 2:02 left before witnessing Cecil connect on three free throws to regain the lead until sophomore forward Tatiana Garvin made a last second layup to even the score at 16 as the buzzer sounded. Cecil then hit the floor running in the second period as they went on a 10-0 run over the first 5:07 of play to take a 26-16 lead before Garvin stopped the bleeding with a made layup. Prince George's continued to struggle shooting from the floor, connecting on only 2 of their 14 shots and 1 of their 8 chances from the line during the period to head into halftime trailing 41-21. Garvin led the Owls in scoring at the break with 11 points while adding 9 rebounds, including 4 offensive boards.

Prince George's was able to begin to turn things around in the third, outscoring the Seahawks 18-15 to slowly chip away at their lead. Freshman DaJine'e Gatling produced 11 of the Owls 18 points. Prince George's continued to get to the line which put Cecil in foul trouble as they had only two reserve players the entire game. Heading into the final period trailing by 17, the Owls put the pressure on as they hit on all three of their three point attempts and connected on a highly efficient 13 of 21 shots from the floor. The Owls continued to climb back and managed to cut the lead to 7 with a made three pointer from freshman Tonessa Crump with 0:36 remaining but the Owls comeback fell short as time expired, giving the Seahawks the 80-72 victory. Garvin (30 pts, 21 rbs) and Gatling(25 pts, 12 rbs) both recorded a double-double in the loss for the Owls. The Owls will look to bounce back on the road Tuesday, November 26th when they hit the road to face College of Southern Maryland. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm.
