Prince George's Student-Athletes Recognized For Academic Success By Maryland JUCO And NJCAA Region XX
LARGO, Md. – Fueled by National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic first-team selection Gina Seifert (Owings, Md./Northern), Prince George's Community College registered seven student-athletes on the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) All-Academic team and four student-athletes were recognized on the NJCAA Region XX All-Academic team.
Seifert, a member of the Owls women's basketball team, was joined on both teams from men's soccer players Fabian Castillo (Clinton, Md./Gwynn Park) and Elmer Hernandez (College Park, Md./Parkdale) and baseball player Jake Brewer (Gibson City, Ill./Gibson City Melvin Sibley) on both the MD JUCO and the NJCAA Region XX All-Academic teams. Brian Ngoh (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) from men's soccer and Destiny Barber (Suitland, Md./Potomac) and Samaria Ward (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo) were also selected to the MD JUCO All-Academic team.
Seifert continues to collect hardware for her work in the classroom. She is a two-time NJCAA All-Academic first-team honoree and also has garnered MD JUCO and NJCAA Region XX All-Academic accolades for the second-straight season. Graduating with a 4.00 grade-point average, Seifert was also named the 2017-18 Prince George's Community College Academic Student-Athlete of the Year.
On the hardwood, Seifert averaged 21.8 points and 15.7 rebounds per game in 16 games this season. The sophomore scored double figures 16 times including 11 games with 20 points and a pair of 30-point performances. Seifert hauled in double digits in rebounds in 14 of the 16 games to finish the season with 14 double-doubles and grabbed at least 15 boards 11 times on the year. Named the NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week twice in 2017-18 she notched a career-high 30 points against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6 and again eight days later at Chesapeake College. The sophomore, who was named to the All-NJCAA Region XX Division III first team, hauled in a career-best 23 caroms against Northern Virginia on Jan. 22.
Hernandez, who majored in information technology, picks up academic recognition from both the conference and region for the second-straight year to join Seifert as the only two-time winners of the group. Hernandez appeared in 15 matches including 14 starts in 2017 and posted two goals and an assist for five points on the year including his first collegiate tally against Harford on Sept. 5.
Castillo, who majored in business administration, played in only two games this season due to injury. The sophomore had one of most impressive goals of the season who he booted in a shot from midfield against Howard on Oct. 3.
Brewer, who majored in general studies, appeared in 27 games and posted a .359 batting average with 28 hits, 17 runs scored, five doubles, two triples and 11 RBIs to help Prince George's earn its second-straight NJCAA Region XX Division III title in 2018.
Ngoh, who is majoring in engineering, appeared in 14 games and posted his tall frame to register four goals for eight points on the soccer pitch in 2017. The freshman notched his first collegiate goal against Cecil on Sept. 15.
Barber, who is majoring in general studies, participated in four meets for the track and field team. The freshman finished sixth in the 400-meter dash at the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the spring.
Ward, who is majoring in human services, is a member of the track and field team but did not compete in a meet this season.
