Seifert's Double-Double Lifts Prince George's Women's Basketball Past Cumberland County, 51-48

LARGO, Md. – Gina Seifert (Owings, Md./Northern) registered a career-high 25 points along with 12 rebounds to power Prince George's Community College past Cumberland County College 51-48 in the women's basketball season opener for both teams.

Seifert converted 11 of 22 shots from the field and 3 of 6 from the free throw line to notch her second 20 point game and first since scoring 20 points against Brookdale on Jan. 28, 2017. The sophomore also grabbed six rebounds on both ends of the floor to finish with double digits in rebounds for the seventh-straight regular season game dating back to last season. It was also her 11th double-double of her career.

Markaila Carter (Little Rock, Ark./Potomac) stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Rickkia Jackson (Washington, D.C./Ballou) narrowly missed a double-double in her collegiate debut, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort.

Seifert scored six of the eight points in the first quarter, but the Dukes (0-1) took a 10-8 lead going into the second quarter.

A crazy final minute of the second quarter saw four lead changes. Destiny Esquilin gave Cumberland County a 20-19 lead with 62 seconds left before Seifert answered with a basket in the paint with 47 seconds left to give Prince's the lead. Esquilin handed the Dukes the lead again with 14 seconds left but left a little too much time on the clock after Carter scored in the paint to give Prince George's a 23-22 edge going into the locker room.

The Owls used an 8-2 to take their largest lead of the game at 38-31 after Jackson converted a traditional 3-point play at 5:41 and Camry Gantt (Tyrell County, N.C./Fairmont Heights) scored one of her two baskets at 4:55 for the six-point lead. After Esquilin hit a jumper, Jackson drained a trey for a 38-31 advantage. Prince George led 41-39 after three quarters.

Cumberland County never seemed to go away, but with the Owls clinging to a 45-44 lead with 4:22 on the clock Seifert hit back-to-back shots to put the Largo program up five points. Neither team scored a basket in the next three minutes before Seifert scored in the paint with 1:17 remaining. Esquilin scored the final four points, but Prince George's came away with the 51-48 decision.

Daja Latten (Washington, D.C./Cardozo Education Campus) (3 points, 5 rebounds), Gantt (4 points, 2 rebounds) and Giavonni Thomas (Riverdale, Md./Fairmont Heights) (3 rebounds) also made their collegiate debut on the night.

Esquilin paced the Dukes with 25 points while SyDonnie Dawkins added 12 points in the losing effort.

Prince George's returns to action on Saturday at the Patrick Henry Tournament. The Owls will play host Patrick Henry in the first game with a 2 p.m. tipoff.
