Edwin Claros Propels Sixth-Ranked Prince George's Men's Soccer Past No. 5 Nassau, 3-1

GERMANTOWN, Md. – Edwin Claros (Adelphi, Md./High Point) scored a goal in each half to propel sixth-ranked Prince George's Community College past No. 5 Nassau Community College 3-1 at the Tom Bichy Memorial Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday.

Edwin Claros, a National Junior College Athletic Association Second-Team All-American last season, scored in the third minute and then found the twine early in the second half to help the Owls (1-0-0) to the season-opening victory. The sophomore paced the team with 17 goals and nine assists for 43 points in 2016.

Roshawn Panton (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) added a goal in the second half while Elmer Hernandez (College Park, Md./Parkdale) dished out an assist on Edwin Claro's first tally of the afternoon and Carlos Calix (College Park, Md./Parkdale) dished out a helper on Panton's marker. Jonathan Claros (Adelphi, Md./High Point) made eight saves in the winning effort.

Leonel Alfaro notched the Lions (0-4-0) lone goal for Nassau while Xavier Gomez made four saves in the loss.

Fueled by two goals by Edwin Claros, Prince George's jumped out to the early advantage and held on to earn the win in the squad's season opener. The Owls have a five-game regular season winning streak after winning the final four games of the regular season in 2016.

It did not take long for Prince George's to get on the scoreboard after Hernandez found Edwin Claros on the right side, who punched the ball into the left netting at the 2:58 mark for a 1-0 edge.

Edwin Claros then gave the Owls a two-goal lead when he danced around the Nassau netminder near the far post into the netting at the 51:08 mark for a 2-0 advantage.

The Lions got on the scoreboard to cut the margin to 2-1 after Alfaro found the back of the net at 68:56.

Calix served a perfect ball from midfield and Panton did the rest to beat a defender and score at 75:08 to restore a two-goal lead at 3-1.

After Alfaro scored, Nassau only had two shots in the final 20 minutes of the match and both attempts were turned away by Jonathan Claros.

Prince George's returns to action and makes its PGCC Bermuda Soccer Field debut on Tuesday when the squad hosts Hartford. Match time is 6 p.m.
