Tough Weekend for Owls Soccer

Tough Weekend for Owls Soccer

The Owls soccer team went 1-2 over the weekend after playing three competitive games in four days. They were able to beat Chesapeake on Friday night but lost back to back games on Sunday and Monday against Essex County College, New Jersey and College of Southern Maryland by a score of 4-0 and 2-1 respectively.

Although they lost both games, it was a good showing for the Owls. Against Essex NJ, they were able to create solid opportunities to score but were unable to find the back of the net.

The game against College of Southern Maryland was much more intense and the Owls men battled until the final whistle. Although College of Southern Maryland escaped with the 2-1 advantage, statistically both teams were almost identical in shots, saves, fouls and corner kicks. Jay Porter opened the scoring in the 5th minute for Southern Maryland and they carried the 1-0 lead into the half.

It was a back and forth affair for both teams in the second half until Southern Maryland was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Mauricio Arbaca took responsibility for the kick and gave Southern Maryland the 2-0 lead.

Kevin Chavez pulled one back for the Owls in the 82nd minute to give his team life and momentum. Although this created a scare for the opponent and the Owls men created goal scoring opportunities in the final minutes, they were unable to even the score.

The Owls will travel on Wednesday, October 1, to play Cecil. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM.
