Owls Beat Old Rivals

Owls Beat Old Rivals

The Owls men soccer team traveled to CCBC Catonsville to take on one of their oldest rivals on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in hopes of getting back to winning ways.

It was a fast start for the home team who looked confident while employing their aggressive style of play from the first whistle. This intensity seemed to work for Catonsville, as they were able to take the 1-0 lead with only 5 minutes played.

However, the response from the Owls men was immediate. From the kickoff, a direct attack caught Catonsville by surprise and Kevin Chavez was able to crack the Cardinals defense with a pass through the middle to George Afakpe.  Afakpe, with his first start of the season, took a low shot that hit off the post and left the Cardinals goalkeeper staring. This was his first goal of the season and with only 6 minutes played the game was tied at one goal apiece.

Afakpe continued with his offensive output in the 22nd minute when he completed the brace by scoring the Owls second goal of the game. This time he received a pass from Temitope Adetumji and had great placement on the shot to sneak it inside the far post. This momentum carried on for the Owls and Mecardo Knight was able to add his name to the score sheet in the 26th minute to end the half with the Owls holding a 3-1 lead.

The Cardinals pressed on into the second half, but were only able to score a consolation goal. The game ended with the Owls earning the win with a final score of 3-2.

The Owls will play host to Chesapeake on Friday, September 26, at 6:00 PM. This will be their first of four games within the next six days.
